Hi,

I'd like to buy a collectible, historic 1911...who in Canada sells something like this/how do I find a good deal?

I'm not looking for any years in particular - just something with some history that won't break the bank.

If you are strictly looking for a Colt or other GI contract 1911 from the pre 1920 era or a Colt Government model [commercial version] from that same era that is in any kind of decent original condition [unrefinished, correct parts, no aftermarket sites, grips or other parts installed, etc] expect to pay premium price unless you happen to encounter someone who really doesn't know what they have.

IIRC there was a Colt Government from the 1914 era on the EE here the other day with an asking price of ~ $2,500. It's now sold. They don't last long.

The days of picking up a nice vintage 1911/1911A1 GI or commercial for $350 are long gone.

Someone on "Firearms Canada" has a Remington-Rand .45 1911A1 for $425. Crappy pictures but that was the best price I have seen for a while.

What degree or level of 'historical' interest are you considering? I have one that was the personal paper punching accurized effort of an old gunsmith friend of note on the island. ;)It's a keeper for me because of who owned and did the work on it, George King:). Why I ask though is because of one I saw at the recent gun show in Naniamo. APPARENTLY, going by the serial number, it falls into the group that was produced in Canada. I wasn't really interested so I neglected to check for a small crest that would supposedly varify that. A pretty hefty price on it but if you are interested, PM me and I'll send you the sellers contact info. I'd add it here but I'd probably get my pee pee slapped again for promoting a site non sponsor.

The only vintage 1911's produced in Canada were the some ~ 100 examples produced by North American Arms in Quebec circa 1918 in a workup to a full production contract that was subsequently cancelled.

For Canadian collectors, the NAA 1911 is somewhat of a 'holy grail' of the early 1911 model world. The Yanks usually aren't too hepped on them as they will say generally they never saw actual service. There actually was one on the EE here in the past couple of years with a $20K asking price.

Had WWI gone into 1919 or 1920 we likely would've seen GI 1911's produced in full production by NAA, as well as makers like Winchester on this continent and the likes of FN Browning in Europe. Anyway, I digress....

Or did you mean to say, the example you saw at the Nanaimo show was one of the ~ 5,000 Colt produced Government [commercial] models that Canada purchased for WWI issue?

Geez, I gotta get up to that Nanaimo show next time..... :)

Ok...I don't care if it has all original parts, I mostly just want it to be old and to shoot (occasionally). I was hoping there'd be somewhere I could browse ones for sale to Canadians online, but I guess there's no such place.

older 1911's in any shape are hard to come by, look for firearms auctions, and ranges for the chance to get one, you get the odd guy that doesnt care about getting his dollar value for it and is basicly giving it away, or an estate sale auction. Good luck, myself i'm still looking.

The marking signifying or authenticating the Quebec is something, as I mentioned in my previous post, I neglected to check for. It was 'interesting' but not an item I was interested in obtaining. So, after an indication of price, I continued. So, as to the exact details as to whether or not it is 1 of 100 or 1 of 5000, sorry, I couldn't tell you. You'd have to ask the seller.
