Looking for advice on first AR purchase.

As the title says, looking for input before I commit.

Now, as far as what I want to do, well everything of course! I want to clear a room then drop a target 800m out :D Now I know thats not realistic so what I am really looking for is middle of the road: Compact enough to shoot n scoot and be able to mark repeatable groups out to 400m.

Looking hard at a NEA-15 in 14.5" paired up with an EOTech MPO. I know the optics are more than the cost of the firearm, but it seems to fit the bill for a good close to med range kit, any thoughts on other options?

Would a bi pod be overkill/just look wrong on a 14.5"?

Now I know its going to be heavily dependent on weather, shooter skill and ammo choice, but is 400m and maybe a bit furtherer realistic in a 14.5" kit?

Sixteen inch stainless medium profile barrel, one in nine twist, 223 or wylde chamber, mid length gas system, full length light weight hand guard, JP enterprises trigger, comp of your choice, stainless pins, ambi safety, 1-4 optic
 
3.25x works for the military. Nothing wrong with it. A variable gives you more options is all.

A varmit rig works well for long range, not so hot for CQB or games where you have to move a lot with the rifle.

16 inch may well be best option for both short and long range.
 
16" midlength fits the bill nicely. 16" is also the legal mininum for rifles that enter the US if you ever planned on taking courses or competing down there.
A 1/8 or 1/7 twist will serve you better if you plan on using heavier bullets for the longer ranges. .223 Wylde is a great chamber for both 5.56mm and .223 ammo.
Try to find a barrel that's "government" or a medium contour (.740" or so) under the handguards. Lightweight profile would be great too, may find that groups open up a bit as the barrel heats up.
Armalite makes 16" midlengths very similar to this, contact Wolverine for more info. I'd stick with a stock configuration for now and start messing with accessories once you you've been shooting for awhile.

I agree with the others that a 1-4x optic will be a better compromise for various shooting conditions.
 
I think it'd also be a good idea to just get something good, then shoot lots at 100-200 with just plain old irons to really get to know how to shoot it. I think a lot of people starting out think that if they get some uber AR and scope it out with the best thing money can buy, they can hit a dime at 8000 yards... (ok a bit of an exaggeration, but you get the idea)...
 
Looking for a 14.5" mid length, found plenty in the US but I can't find much info on Canadian sellers. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Still would like to stick with as much NEA gear as I can.
 
I got my midlength from Questar....Not sure if they carry them anymore.

I've kept this new upper for 4 years and just finishing my build this month. LOL.

If you are looking to save money just get a CAR length AR. Your #### won't fall off.
 
I am in no rush, just trying to figure out what I need/have access to.
If I wanted to save money, I would pickup norinco and be done.
