I am looking at some holographic sights with magnifier and I have my eyes set on a Eotech MPO II with magnifier. what would be the absolute minimal barrel length for this holographic sight with magnifier?

im sorry, i mean what barrel length is recommended for the use of the holographics and magnifier. would it make sense to have a Eotech MPO II and magnifier on a NEA 15 10.5 CQB platform?

I'd say at least a 30" barrel.....just to be on the safe side.

*facepalm*

lol, sorry for the Newbie question, I just want to know what is the recommended length to have to that kinds of sights before I commit on purchasing an AR.

I just don't want to make a mistake like putting a sniper scope on a pistol.

The length of the barrel has no conjunction with optics.

I am looking at the description and specs of the sights and it says that "The reticle provides 4 aiming dots for target distances of 0-300m, 400m, 500m, and 600m."

would it be okay installing this sights on a NEA 15 CQB and be effective at those ranges?

There's nothing wrong with an Eotech and magnifier on a 10.5" AR. If all your shooting is 100m or less, it's pretty pointless, though.

oh i see! so i guess it is pretty pointless, just more for looks that use, how about if the sights were on a 12.5 platform or 14?

The MPO sight is calibrated for either the 55gr. or 63gr. 5.56 round on a 14.5 flat top or 20" flat top. I am giving you two different answers because I can't remember off the top of my head. I had one mounted on a 20" barrel and I found the whole set up too heavy and switched to a 4X ACOG instead.

My buddy mounted the MPO on his AR with a 14.5 and it works awesome. I personally would only suggest the MPO on a 16" or longer barrel due to the accuracy of the sighting dots. I got better groups with the MPO than with my ACOG. Something to chew over.

It doesn't really matter what gun you're putting them on, it matters what you're doing with the gun.

I shoot my 14.5" and 10.5" ARs out to 300m regularly with red dot sights and no magnification. It's good enough to hit the steel I'm aiming at.

If you're shooting to longer distances and/or trying to get the smallest groups you can, then a magnifier would help. If all your shooting is at 100m or less you won't likely see much benefit from the magnifier.

Oh I see. thanks.

Well - as stated previously the choice of sight really has no bearing on the length of your rifle.....sooooooo since you are talking about a restricted rifle...

What is the maximum distance that you can shoot at the range you plan on spending most of your time? If you are limited to less than 200metres, then choose any AR barrel length that you like & put whatever optic you like. At these distances you don't really need magnification & barrel length won't have much effect.

I think you are waaay over analyzing this - the sights don't care if you are running 10.5, 12.5, 14, 16, 20.......ask yourself at what distances you plan to shoot & go from there.

okay perfect, that's what I needed to know, do you think on a 10.5 ar the magnifier dots would be accurate at long distances?

at the gun range there is a range that is 100metres and another range that is 300metres. I want a purchase a platform and sights that is versatile for both ranges.

The dots will be regulated for a certain barrel length/ammo combo, as has already been mentioned.

Regardless of your barrel length/ammo combo they will be usable for aiming points, though not necessarily what they are set for.

For example, you may use a "longer" dot for a closer distance or find you can bracket a target between two dots.

OP

I think you mean will the point of impact match up with the various dots on the sight system you are looking at. Based on Kevin B response, I doubt they will correspond with a 10.5 barrel. Muzzle velocity will be lower than with a 14.5 or 20 inch (way less in the later case) which will mean that your rounds will impact lower than the dot says (assuming you use the same load the site is calibrated for)

Instead of a red dot or other with fixed calibration sight settings that are necessarily based on a certain bullet/BC/MV, get a sight with adjustable turrets so you can dial in a zero for all the different distances at your range facility.

If you are set on a Red Dot type, look at Lucid HD (I have no idea if they are good or not) or some type of low powered variable. I even has an available magnifier.

I run a Falcon Menace 1.5x5 that I for CQB will shoot another in SR this year. Range varies from 10 yards to 500. I haven't stretched the 5x past 400 yet but I was able to get a good sight picture at that distance. Vortex 1-4x is also popular, as well as several more expensive options from various manufacturers.

Just an idea. If you really are factoring in how the sight system will look on your AR....I can't help you much. :)
