full choke and shot choices?

hey guys, i just picked up a very nice used remington 1100. it has a built in choke in the barrel, the previous owner said its a full choke. just wanted to double check what i could feed through this thing. i know itll take bird shot, but will it take any sort of buck shot or slug at all?

Any lead shot including buckshot will be fine. Rifled slugs will also be fine in your full choke, maybe nost as accurate as a more open choke, but you will not harm anything. People have been doing this for years.

excellent thanks for the quick reply. is there anything i shouldnt put through it? its labelled as a 3" magnum so i know no 3 1/2 shot, wanna make sure i dont try to put something in there that shouldnt be in there

Does it not state what the choke is ? ... should be stamped right on the
the barrel just ahead of the receiver.

Bore Gauge will tell for sure. I have two of them and live in SW Ontario. I can measure the barrel, if you are close by. Many gun shops will have bore gauges.

ya, just see if a dime (coin) fits into choke. the dime test. full choke wont take it. better to use a caliper, but hey, im old fashioned.

check the choke of a 12 gauge shotgun with a dime: the dime won't fit in a full choke barrel, but will fit in an improved cylinder barrel with about the thickness of the dime to spare.​

You may allready know this,but just in case..........

In terms of what not to shoot from your fixed full choke......Do not shoot steel. If you are planning to hunt waterfowl, take barrel to gunsmith, ask for him to measure existing choke, If it is indeed full, tell him about your plans for waterfowl.He will probably be able to open the choke to approx modified so that steel will be safe to shoot.
Iceman touched on this by saying any lead shot is ok.

excellent thanks guys, i checked the side of the barrel and it says full. good to know just to be 100% safe with this. is it a good idea to have this thing opened up and threaded to accept remington chokes?
