Hi folks, brother and i are buying new semi's, leaning to the Ruger as we believe they are of better quality, based on the similiar design to my now constantly jamming cooey and my sold 30.06 semi that jammed constanly...rem is cheaper but gun will be with us for life...thanks in advance for comments.

Ruger - Build quality and tons of aftermarket parts

597 VTR I have is jam city. tried various brands of ammo, new mags, and also upgraded extractor and hammer but those didn't help. I used the gun maybe 4 times and it's sat in it's box almost a year. I picked up a 10-22 a few months back and it's proved to be a better choice for reliability.

I originally owned a Rem 597 from Cabelas, after sending it back twice, they sent me a Ruger (with no extra cost to me) as a replacement. Rem 597 with a scope $209.99, they sent me a Ruger 10 22 with a Simmons Pro Hunter Master series for my original purchase price.
The advantages I noticed with Rem 597 were; (1) out of the box it had a longer length of pull, (2) the trigger was lighter(4.5lbs vs 9lbs) and not as sloppy, (3) the barrel was longer and thicker 20" vs 18.5", (4) the action was held in the stock with two screws vs 1 screw and a barrel band. Over all the fit and finish seemed higher with the Rem. Having said that there are hundreds of aftermarket parts for a Ruger. Myself Since I got my 10 22 for such a excellent deal. I installed a Hornet Custom Fast-Action Trigger kit with an Over-Travel trigger option. A trigger shim kit from triggershims. com. A PWS T3 Magazine Release Lever, I then polished the bolt and receiver. Now it shoots like a top, a lot of work for an out of the box 10 22.
Final thoughts; if you want a lighter more compact 22 and you want lots of modification options go with the Ruger. If you want a good out of the box 22 go with Rem 597.

I currently have a Ruger SR-22, 10-22, and a ISSC mk-22. thinking of trading in the ISSC mk-22 for a remington 597-vtr. I have never fired or held a Remington 597-vtr.
Should I stick with the ruger or atleast try the Remington? any advice would be good.

thanks folks, found a "pietta" but considerably more money, comes with a 30 and 50 mag, the bx-25 mag on rugers site apparently is not available in Canada, I want an extended mag but disappointed I cannot get one for the ruger.

There's lots of 25rd mags advalible for the 10/22.

I just bought a new 10 22 deluxe sporter it functions fine no jams or failure to feeds I got a butler creek 25rd mag no problems with it either. I mounted a 3x9 scope using the supplied scope rail it came loose after a few shots put some loctite on the screws and now it holds tight. I probably have about 1000 rounds through the gun I would recommend it .

The Marlin 60 has a tube, i want clips for ease of use while transporting/hunting, teh 795 looks like the same design as my old cooye that plain wore out.

Thanks for all the great info here, ruger it is, now have to price out through the supporting vendors.

this is my experience with 10/22 aftermarket mags:
Butler Creek hot lips jammed more rounds than fired
Butler Creek steel lips required very minor clearancing of the feed lips to stop the stovepiping and are now flawless
Promag 32 rd. ran great for a few years then the follower kept jamming inside the mag at around 25 rds, they still work fine so long as I dont try to jam another round in.
Shooters Ridge 30 rd double stack worked flawless first time out, after maybe 200 rds the follower jammed inside mag body
Tactical Inc. I could not get to feed 25 rds of Blazer reliably (last 4 or 5 rds all jammed consistently) All other brands of ammo could not get more than 10 or 12 rds before follower jammed
Others have had different experiences than me but the best mag is agreeably the BC Steel lips mags. Highest success rate of all the aftermarket mags by far
