Does your 1911 have a mainspring cap pin? I recently bought a Springfield 1911 loaded model 2nd hand, I put a new magwell and mainspring housing on the gun but noticed that there was no mainspring cap pin to hold the mainspring down, I talked to 2 different dealers and got conflicting answers, one told me all mainsprings need a cap pin the other told me some newer 1911dont need the cap pin... so what im looking for is someone who has knowledge of this model or better yet has one to tell me if theirs has a pin or not.

I have a Springfield 1911 GI, I would be glad to help, as would others I'm sure, but it is unclear as to what you are asking.

What is the main spring cap you are talking about? I think your terminology is out of sync with the 1911 Community.

The Main Spring is held in place with the grip safety, and the back strap. The back strap is the the part that holds it all together, and it is held in place with a pin on both my Springfield and Colt 1911.

The mainspring in the mainspring housing has a cap that is held in the housing by a pin called the mainspring cap pin, this keeps the spring compressed. Look just under your grip safety on the backstrap (mainspring housing) there is a small hole, does yours have a pin in it??

I own 5 1911's, 2 Para a Kimber and an STI they all have this cap pin visible from the mainspring housing my springfield is the only gun without one.

I think your refering to the mainspring housing pin at the bottom of the grip.

I think you are talking about the hole at the top of the mainspring housing on the Springfield 1911's that are equipped with the Springfield’s integral locking system (ITS). This is the mainspring housing takedown hole and someone must introduce a pin to dissasemble the mainspring housing from the gun when needed. Just #### the hammer and introduce the pin, then slowly lower the hammer and voilà. I personnaly like this ITS system, pretty simple to use and it locks the gun tight rending it a simple paperweight... until someone have the key of course... :D

Pics tell a 1000 words.

Ok take a look at my 1911's each has a pin under the grip safety, my springfield is on the end, the mainspring housing is aftermarket(Ed Brown) the original is pictured below, it never had a retaining pin but not sure if this is factory because I purchased the gun used. 8ball you can see the ITS on the original maispring housing the pin is next to it (I didnt receive the key for the ITS anyways) this is the mainspring cap pin....does yours have a pin in it???

Mine does not have a pin in this hole, it is for dissasembly only.

@enefgee: The ITS maispring housing still interchangeable with all other full framed 1911.
