Here's the question: would it be possible to re-chamber a Remington Model 8 in .30 Remington to a round that is actually commercially available?

The primary candidate for re-chambering seems to be the 6.8 SPC, as it is essentially a .30 Remington that is .200 shorter. Having said that, are they any other commercially available rounds in existence that could be used and would require little modification to the essential operating components (bolt, magazine, barrel block, recoil mechanism etc)?

I am a machinist apprentice and have ample access to rifle barrels, so basic labor and cost are of little consequence. The rifle in question was given to me by my uncle, who told me that he hates the fact he can't shoot it and would be fine with me tearing it down and reworking it to use modern ammunition. This rifle is not in collector's condition, but merely in fine serviceable condition. Little to no finish remains.

Thanks for the help!

Would it be possible to neck up 6.8mmSPC brass to 30 Rem? Assuming the bore was still good, that's what I would do. I think the 6.8mmSPC might also be higher pressure than the 30 Rem and can't say for sure if the old model 8 could handle the extra pressure. Just my 2 cents.

Why not just get some brass (I think Epps sells it) and load up a bunch of .30 Remington ammo? The your Uncle can shoot the rifle and so can you. All it is really is a rimless .30-30, uses the same data, powders and bullets.

I wish that was true, but after calling them, they apparently only have some boxes of CIL loaded rounds, and for the staggering price of $50-$75 per box. I do, however, have a friend who apparently has a stash of cases, and I'll look into getting those if I can. Having said that, I would still like to do a rebarrel (even to the original .30 Remington case) but would be interested in knowing what other cases might fit, while being confined to the .420 rim/base x 2.525 OAL. I should also note that if i wanted to do a new caliber, I would make another barrel extension, as it seems like it would be relatively simple to reverse-engineer.

One interesting option would be the .22-6.8SPC, or the .22 PDK, which should work and can be down-loaded to match the thrust of the .30 Remington, but still provide an increase in stopping power over a .223

I have new brass - PM me if you get stuck.

Or, it's easy to convert 30-30. You have a lathe, so go at it.

I bought some 30 remington brass from bashaw sports. Give them a call to see if he as any left.

I know a fella that recently offered a barrel in 300 Savage for one of them, PM me if you are interested in talking to him.
EDIT: opps, I think it was for a Model 81

Thanks for the help guys!

One of my buddies apparently has a stash of cases in his shop, so i'll talk to him first.

After doing some more analysis on the barrel extension, it appears to be a very easy part to reverse engineer and remake. Nothing that can't be done on manual lathe and/or with a good CNC machine.

I still would like to know what other cartridges might fit in the footprint of the .30 Remington. A 6.8 SPC wildcat is, again, the best option, but what else may work?
