What is the lightest bullet I should be able to shoot with my .223 with a 1:9" barrel?

I haven't tried lighter than 50gr. Hornady 50gr spsx shoots very well out of my cz527 varmint (1-9 twist) with H335.

I was worried about the spsx exploding mid-flight because of its really thin jacket. Hornady says to keep velocity under 3400fps, not specifing twist rate. I have not chrony'd it, but I believe I am sitting about 3340-3390fps.

Shoots great, gophers are a red mist. Easily a sub 1" load from the bench when I do my part.

Thanks for the replys. I have some 50gr V-Max sitting in the basement that I don't think I've ever tried and was wondering if it would be worth it. I also have 3 different kinds of bullets in the 68gr and 69gr weights to try. I normally use Benchmark (with great results) but read or heard somewhere that I should be looking at Varget for the heavier bullets. Never bought it before but I'm wondering if I should pick up a pound or stick with Benchmark? I've only shot the 60gr Noslers out of this rifle so far.

I only use varget. I find the 50gr nolser b-tip and 53 gr vmax to shoot really well also. Those are my choice for yotie they also make a hell of a mess on a gopher.

I shoot 50gr v max in my axis using benchmark. Great load. Very small groupings...hitting golf.balls all day at 100m and gophers are just fun. Tried numerous other powders including varget and never got as good of results as i did with benchmark for the 50 gr...for 62-65 gr i prefer imr4198 personally.

Ooops. I guess I lied to you guys. Sorry about that. I used H335 in this rifle and not Benchmark. Benchmark is 80 and H335 is 81 on the burn rate chart so they should be very similar. Interestingly, XBR is 85 and Varget is 99. CFE 223 is 103.

Interesting that I have had no success with lighter bullets. Wondering which 40gr bullet your using?

I use Nosler b-tip 40g with Benchmark and I got some reloaded with h-322 but not tested yet, according to quick load I should get more velocity with h-322.

A little OT, but what are the heaviest/longest bullets stabilized by a 1:9 barrel? Asking what people have actually achieved.

I have shot a lot of 40 gr Ballistic Tips at 3900 fps out of my 1:9 twist 223 Ackley. Tiny groups at 100 yd, small groups at 300 meters, and barely groups at 500. :)

They are hard on coyotes out to 250, reasonably efficient to 400.
