hunting with a .50 BMG

well i contacted the mnr and here is what they told me (i copied and pasted)
Hello,

Thank you for your enquiry.

Under Ontario Regulations 665/98 of the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act:

75. A person shall not use a rifle known as a rim-fire rifle, a shotgun smaller than 20 gauge when loaded with shot or any shotgun loaded with shot smaller than SG or number one buck for hunting big game. O. Reg. 665/98, s. 75.

Ontario’s only requirement for hunting big game with a rifle is that you use a centrefire rifle. Provided that the .50 bmg is not a restricted or prohibited weapon under the Firearms Act, than there would be no issue with using it in big game hunt where rifles are permitted.

For information on the Firearms Act and the Criminal Code please contact the Canadian Firearms Centre at 1-800-731-4000.

Regards,

this was my question....

Subject: hunting with a .50 bmg in Ontario?

hi i am wondering if it is legal to hunt deer, moose, bear, big game, etc. with a .50 bmg in Ontario? i don't have one yet and would like to know if it is before i buy one. i searched the site, read the books and came up with no true answer about it. can you please clarify this for me. thank you.

Pardon me. I'll just say this and vacate this thread quickly. If you're going to say something unflattering about rednecks, then you're grammer should outpace theirs. It is not cool to build yourself up by tearing other people down.

I never went to an English school. I went to a French Catholic separate school in Sturgeon-Falls Ont, and left there twenty three years ago. My wife in Anglican (Catholic lite) I still have to convert math into french in my head, then translate the answer back into english, so I do screw up on things like grammar sometimes. I still often put two L's where there should only be one, and other french symptoms like that. The intent behind it was not about my lack of spelling ability, but rather if someone looks down their nose at someone else, then they should have their house in better order. Which goes back to using the term redneck in a non-positive fashion, meant to push a person down. For someone to do that, yet show signs of being a redneck themselves erodes their credibility. That's where I was coming from. I only recently stopped putting two m's in "coming." comming ain't right. I'm stuck between two languages. Looking back at old threads in other forums some people get ippity if their favorite foreign manufacturer is mispelled, yet the posts they put up are, well, look rednecky. I'll go look for another forum to crab in now. Ciao.

I bow to your language difficulties and say no offence meant. You are multi lingual, which I am not, therefore if your grammar and spelling is not perfect, we must give you leeway as it is not your first language. I only wish I was as fluent in a second language as you. My comments, althought seemingly aimed at you were not, they were aimed at the truly semi-illiterate among us.

I've had some exposure to the big 5-0 other than the internet forums and youtube. The 50 BMG is way overkill, they're heavy, and can be expensive to feed - they are also AWESOME. If you are up to the task of lugging it around and / or waiting at some high feature for a critter..go for it. Post pic's

WOW somebody revived this thread ... coolio ... as I plan to hunt a umingmak(muskox) and a qinalugaaq(beluga whale) with my PGW 50. ;)

There is nothing cooler than a 50bmg. Over kill for anything except elephant, rhino, hippo, buffalo, whale;)
If I had more money than brains the 50 would be my choice for everything from gopher to grizzly in north america.lol.

Overkill or overcool? I thought about the 50 BMG for a brief moment until I saw the price of the primers. Then I decided that the .375 Cheytac was a more practical way to shoot at the horizon.
