Gentlemen, I have taken a plunge and ordered a BRNO sidelock 12 bore from Anthony at TradeEx. I have found some positive remarks on US sites but a search here did not reveal much. Does anyone have one they hunt with? Any opinions?

I have one I bought from Tradex about a year ago. I'm not much of a shotgun guy, but I thought that a sidelock European double for the small amount of money they wanted was probably quite a good deal; and so it turned out to be. I have hunted pheasants and chukars with it a little and shot hand thrown clay targets with it quite a lot (for me). I couldn't be happier with this shotgun. It fits me well, I hit with it better than any other shotgun I have used, and it's just a joy to carry in general. I don't see how you can go wrong. The quality of my BRNO rifles also convinced me. Cheers, Dan

"where on his website is it?

Y2K,
They are in his shotgun section. There used to be quite a few but it seems there are only a few left and they are obviously the most beat up. SKUs 17369, 14159 and 14175 refer.

There are 2 listed on the EE right now I think by tradeex. One is "as new" and the other near the same. One is English stock and one is straight stock. I have 2 of these Brno sidelocks in 12 gauge and one in 16 gauge. They are great handling guns. These guns are greatly undervalued for the quality you get. They are true sidelocks with chopper lump barrels and hidden third fastener. It would cost a fair bit to make a gun like this today.

Plus one on what Gunsaholic said! These are the best of the best for your money when looking for a Euro Sidelock, CZ could never make these guns under there banner for less than $5000 today, a great bargain, I have an english 12ga from the 70's but my 16 from the late 60's is the best quality wise, good luck, Dale Z!

I have a good grasp on rough shooting. My great uncle was a game keeper on an estate in Wales near Devon. He never could grasp how we did it in Canada. Driven game was his passion. He always referred to shotshells as "cartridges" I wish he was still around to answer to the questions I have these days. I do remember that shooting a ruffed grouse on the ground was just wrong for him. He always said that the .22 was the gun for ground shooting vermin and the rest is for the shotgun.

Is the sidelock design better?

I think it is a matter of choice. The boxlock may be a bit of a stronger design because not as much wood needs to be removed from the wrist area of the stock. On the other hand, because of the design, a sidelock gun is often slimmer in the wrist and action creating better handling characteristics.. It is also generally easier to change a mainspring on a sidelock should one break in the field. Most high end guns are sidelocks.

May I ask what the price is for this firearm?

May I ask what the price is for this firearm?

I don't know about the OP's gun but the 2 on the EE now are listed at $450.00 and $395.00 which is a typical price. Some on tradeex are as low as $225.00 give or take but these are examples that have seen quite a bit of use and usually have faults such as pitting or cracked stocks or thin bluing etc.

Holly molly, between $350 to $450 for a sidelock.......I would then question the quality. Unheard of, I thought the price would of been around $2,500. I know that Ugartechea makes the Model 75 in a sidelock for about $2,700 retail, which is of good quailty, however I question the quality of this said firearm.

Remember these are solid dependable and well made. ( I have been told) They were made during the comm bloc era and labour was cheap. They are not engraved and do not feature exhibition grade walnut. I will post a feild report when I receive the shotgun.

Question the quality all you want the BRNO's are well built, and were made at a time when quality counted.

I had 13k rounds through mine before I sold it and it was 40 some odd years old at the point with who knows how many rounds fired previously.

This is why I said they are greatly undervalued. There is nothing wrong with the quality. In fact, story has it that Brno never made money on these guns because of the cost to make. When you get a sidelock, chopper lump barrels, hidden third fastener and walnut, guess what it would cost today. And while most of the Brno's you see for sale are the plain versions, they did come with different levels of engraving and wood plus ejectors. The one 12 gauge I have with straight grip stock has ejectors, upgraded wood and gold trigger and guard. And where you are effects price. They don't find them in the US for as cheap as we can buy them here and still they figure them as undervalued. But even here, if you find one in 16 gauge that is in great condition, you are going to pay a lot more than for a 12 gauge. When these were made, Brno was known for quality. This is not to say there aren't better sidelocks. We are saying for what you get, they are a great deal.
Also, you made reference to the new Uggie model 75 being made at $2700.00 and thinking the Brno would be at least $2500.00. I assume you realize that we are not talking new guns here with the Brno.
