How consistent are the 75gr. AMAXs in size / shape. I was loading some tonight and opened a new box to finish my loads. My seating die did not change and all of the sudden my caliper is telling me that my OAL went from 2.430 to 2.420-2.430.

Anyone else notice this?

Did you check to make sure the new box was the same lot as your previous?

If it is a different lot then that would explain exactly why it changed.
 
They are good bullets out of my Mr-1 the groups were MOA but they cant approach the Lapua Scenar 77 gr for tops groups, in another rifle it could be different... JP.
 
The bullet are a different lot. Bought at two different places a couple of months apart. Unfortunately I've ended up with some odd numbers so I had to combine two boxes to finish loading. At least I know which ones are which.
 
As the bullet dies wear the ogive will move out (bullet gets longer and fatter), when the die is no longer within spec and is replaced, the ogive now moves closer to the bullet base (bullets get shorter and thinner)

Has nothing to do with the tip of any bullet, plastic, lead or otherwise.
 
I'm using a Forstner Conpetition SEATO die and Ive loaded maybe 600 rounds with it. I'm hoping my die isn't wearing to any quantifiable degree yet.

Comparing the OAL of the bullets, from base to tip, as well as from base to ogive, using an OAL comparator, has nothing to do with dies ;)
 
Ah yes, my mistake.

The thing to do is compare the different lot of bullets that the OP is using, and see if the variation is due to tip inconsistency, or ogive problems.
