Muzzleloaders?

Anyone here hunt with a traditional muzzleloader shotgun?
Yup.:)
This is a Berreta I no longer own, killed a few rufies, chukars and pheasants
with it

Here's ,a pic of my son and his original Chance and Sons 12 bore gun that was willed to him by my father.
he normally only uses the first barrel - because that's all he needs after the bird is in the air!

I've had a few more over the years but haven't got any pics except in prints.

I've hunted with both original and contemporary guns, both percussion and flint. Grouse, rabbits, hares, ptarmigan, goose.

Are you looking for help with load data?

Sure! I was firing for the first time is pretty much a novelty firearm, just yesterday.
A 10 gauge flintlock blunderbuss. My very first blackpowder muzzleloader BTW.
I wonder if stiff loads of BP in this (100 grains) are just a waste of powder and bizarre patterns with lots of holes in it?
Only fired it about half of dozen times, while demonstrating my inexperience with these neat guns.
(Thank you Silverback for your much needed help!)
I don't want to sweat it too much with this blunderbuss, because I can foresee a proper fowling piece or a rifle musket in my future.
It's pretty obvious to myself, if this next purchase is a scattergun, a cylinder bored shotgun, it will be a 20-30 yard gun maximum range.
But I'm okay with that.......
Any of your advice will be noted & saved for future referance Cat.

Cheers!

Any luck with the hackenbusche Brutus?

From what little I have read on the reason for the muzzle flare, it was allegedly to enable quicker reloads on the pitching and rolling deck of one of Her Majesty's warships.

I guess if it threw a good load of buckshot, it was good enough to sweep the decks of Napoleon's bateaux at close range.

It would probably be a bit of coin to get a smith to counterbore the muzzle and inset a piece with no flare *if it's even feasible*.

Edit: A while back I was perusing one of the sites that has load data for steel shot in those long 37mm cases, they also put out wierd patterns. (oval shaped).

Fat Tony, my last shot with it yesterday was fifteen 0 buckshot pellets and 100 grains of BP. Seemed to push the odd shaped pattern high & right. In fact it put three pellets with a very close to one another. But way way right for a 7 yard shot.
