time for a bush gun

30/30 Levers! Always been trustworthy.....
You can pick up a decent 1894 for 300-400 in the used EE about three times a week, countess numbers of both species taken with these rifles, 100+ years of reliability cant be argued with!

x 2 on this point. Can't really argue either, at 100 yards the 30-30 would be lethal.

Hey fellas, I'm going to buy a bush gun and I want the lightest rifle or shotgun I can get and I have a $400 budget, bolt, lever, semi or single shot. I had a 303 but to heavy, and I don't care what it's chambered for

Check out my recent post for the Savage 11 Hog Hunter. I hadn't heard of it until last night as it's a new model for 2012, but today I went to Canadian Tire in Kingston and ordered one.

It should meet all the requirements you listed, as well as be rugged and accurate.

A used Rem 700 sps would be great bush gun in .308. They are easy to swing around in bush.

brush gun

You need to decide whether you really want/need optics on your gun.

In your price range this is THE deciding factor cuz if you are including a scope you are very limited to both gun and scope to say the least.

If you really are limiting your shots to the range and game you mentioned I would skip optics and then you have room to get a very decent gun if you shop used carefully.
I would suggest going with a peep sited lever gun in any one of several 30something calibers or bigger.
A Win lever, Marlin lever, Savage lever, or even a Remington pump.
3030/3855/375/444/4570/308/and plenty of other newer calibers.

Your gonna brush hunt with it so shop for the uglier girls who are maybe wearing some nice accessories like a peep site, sling, etc.
Mint examples of the guns above will be harder to find @ $400 but rougher versions should no problem.

Savage 340 carbine in 30-30 if you want a bolt gun, other than that a lever in 30-30, would be the cats a$$. There is a BLR's on EE but they are above your budget.
Sold a CIL 830 in 30-30 last year for about 300.

will I picked up my bush gun, H&R in 30-30 for $200 with a weaver base and rings, very light and short should be easy to use in my blind

Congrats, great rifle at a good price and a classic cartridge.
Don't be surprised if this rifle makes your other rifles jealous. :D
