Okay, was reading some of the posts and last one was the .410 with slugs thread.

So, I asked myself , how many people do you know that actually had to honestly defend themselves from an attacking bear?

I couldn't name a single person, nuisance bears yes but aggressive ones no.

So, here is the question, how many have had to actually pull the trigger in self preservation against a bear?

I have been out at the cottage on the quad with the GF when we came across a cub on the side of the road. Stopped to take a quick look, when mama came out of the bush behind us, probably only 10m from us. Scared the s**t out of my GF, but we took off on the quad, and all was well. I knew to expect the mother around somewhere but was surprised myself to say the least.

Had we been on foot things may have gone differently, as we may not have noticed the cub before getting too close like we did. That was the only time I have actually felt that I would have had a reason to pull the trigger on a Black Bear, but of course had no gun at the time. ;)

That said that was probably the only time I ever felt threatened by a Black Bear, and growing up with a cottage, and deep woods camping/fishing trips in Thunder Bay I have had more than my fair share of Bear encounters. Many times we have had to chase them off our property after getting into the garbage, or have neighbours call us to come do the same on their property.

The occasional surprise visit at the campsite, or cottage usually results in arming myself with a Camera before a gun these days though. Like guns I was brought up to respect the Bears, not fear them! ;)

well this was not me it was a friend. Anyways they were bear hunting and a sow with 3 cubs came in. One of the hunters made a sound and the bear looked strait at them! The beat curcled down wind and suddenly chared strait up the tree! My buddy was packing a 590 with slungs in it. He fired when the bear was almost at the top. It entered the bears head and it stoped her instantly! Its a sham because she had 3 cubs, but i would of done the same thing. Who really wants to get eaten by a big bear. He had a client in the stand with him, hunting from the us. My buddy said he looked at him and his eyes were the size of baseballs! :d crazy ehh!

huh

In my lifetime I have been full on charged by two different grizzly bears and very, very close to many others. One charge was in a truck though so it doesn't really count ;) but the truck does still have the scars to prove it :).

YYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEAAAASSSSSSSSS!!!!! Its been too long, i'd been going into withdrawal from a lack of BDT's (bear defense threads) until now.;):p

.50BMG or bust and shoot between blinks so you don't waste the eyelid meat!!!!cou:

I was at story book gardens years ago, there was these two bears, which were down in a concrete hole behind a large fence.I was very worried there could be a encounter which may not be controllable.I felt help less without a firearm, which gun should I have had for bear defense in this case!

This has been covered many times the only thing suitable for bear defence is a 22 short. Also the the buddy system is very important as well. So when a bear charges, shoot your buddy in the knee with the 22 short and take off

I was chased by a sow (black bear) once. As soon as I got far enough away from her and the cubs, she stopped. Not sure if I would have made it back to the car in time.

I know dozens of people that have been charged by both black and grizzlies.

Some ended with a dead bear, some didn't. I know a few people that have been chewed on by grizzlies.

I've only ever been bluff charged, and never had to pull the trigger, but I've pointed my gun and lots of bears and made the decision to shoot if they came past a certain point.

My gal and I were stalked by a giant black bear while out grouse hunting. Pretty creepy but we made it back to the truck before I had to find out what #6 shot form a 20 gauge will do to a bear. :)

I've also been stalked by younger bears and know many people that have also been stalked. This is somewhat comical when you have a rifle n your hands, not so comical if you are unarmed.

Had a bear that we passed up shooting sneak up behind us while we were having lunch. That was pretty eery to finish lunch break on the edge of a cliff, walk back up the hill a few paces and see the bears tracks in ours in the snow. He had crept up pretty close behind us and we never knew he was there. I often wonder if it had just been one of us instead of two, would he have tried to get a late fall meal?

few years back i came across a black bear while hunting , just stood there staring at me , so i fired a shot in the air to scare him off. It was scary at the moment , but looking back i think he was just suprised to see me there

Hurrah!!! Bear defense! Hurrah!!!
There needs to be ONE sticky Bear defense thread, Just one... A compilation of True and fictional stories (because Fictional Bear defense stories seem unavoidable), a few facts on bears, and a little myth busting (e.i. Playing dead is not always the right solution, Bears are not bullet proof). I'v done a search on bear defense, It's all there, everything you could ever want to know from personal experience to fantasy space Dinos with laser beams defense. Lets make a bear defense thread to end all bear defense threads AKA the never ending bear defense thread.

We also have two very close family friends who have been mauled by grizzlies and survived(seperate attacks). Another family friend was killed quite a few years ago when his horse was spooked by a grizzly bear and he got bucked off and landed with his head on a rock.
