Got my new M&P today. When I put the mag in with the action open (mag empty) is it normal to have to pull the slide back further to get the slide release to button to work such that the slide is fully forward with action closed?

i'm not sure what you are asking. i think the question is if you put the mag in empty when the slide is locked back the slid release wont work?
if you put a empty mag in when the slide is locked back it wont go forward.its not supposed to. you have to release the slide before you put the empty mag in.

I'm confused. Ok, slide is closed. I put in a full mag. I pull the slide all the way back and release. What happens?

I'm just hoping that the slide release works like it does on my ruger mark III. You press the slide release on the side and the slide closes chambering a round from the new mag. I don't want to have to be pulling back further on the slide to get the slide release to work.

Put in a full mag, pull slide back and release, it will chamber a round and apparently you will experience a firearm accident cause it appears you are not too familiar with the process or operations of your guns.

I have always been a rifle shooter. It is my first center fire handgun.

Please do not put a loaded mag into the gun if your not at the range!

Anyways, if the gun is brand new everything may just be stiff.

It may require quite a bit of force on the slide release for the first few hundred rounds. it is a gun made of metal, not paper mache. Put some force into that ####! ;)

What happens with no mag in the gun?

With no mag in the gun, pull the slide back, and push the slide release up to lock the slide back. Now try using the release to drop the slid. No mag to make any difference this way, and you can get a feel for how much force it takes.

The issue is likely that the recoil spring is brand new, and pushing the slide forward with enough force to wedge the slide release in place. Just needs some effort!

Yes, it is a new gun. It was delivered today.

I am currently pushing on the slide release so hard that it hurts. I know that my ruger mark III .22 rimfire doesn't require that much force.

GG33 it is not al that uncommon to have to discover stuff when you get a new gun.

Best advice I can give is to get another shooter with some semi auto experience to give you a 30 second course.

Thank you.

Like I said, I have been shooting and reloading for rifle for a while. Handgun is new for me.

Is there a bur, or dent in the slot cut in the slide?

What happens when you remove the slide completely? Insert a mag into the frame without the slide, and you can look down into the frame to see how everything works. Might give you a better idea.

Like I said what is likely happening is the recoil spring is putting so much pressure on the slide against the slide release that it is becoming wedged so to speak.

Ok here goes nothing...

1) Insert loaded mag, rack slide, carries fully forward, press trigger...BOOM!
2) Insert unloaded mag, rack slide, slide stays open because the follower engages the slide stop.
3) No mag inserted, rack slide, carries fully forward. (Nothing special)
4) No mag inserted, rack slide and hold, engage slide lock (Upward) with thumb, will stay open, now press slide lock (Downward) with thumb to "release", carries fully forward. Obviously this method works with a load mag as well but remember the BOOM! part.

Note for option 4 - When I first picked up my M&P's both had to be worked A LOT before the slide stop would disengage easily. It was sooooo tuff at first that it was taking the skin off my thumb. You could file the slide stop with sand paper or just keep working it and it should eventually round/smooth out on its own.

P.S. Some might say that the slide stop isn't meant as a release. Pretend like you care, to save yourself from entering into an argument, and continue to do what YOU want. If the slide stop starts to fail eventually just replace it like everything else in life.

Thank you for your help. I appreciate it much.

I also watched some videos on YouTube on how to remove the slide without using the tool in the bottom of the grip.

You can press the trigger or use your pinky finger. I don't like removing the frame tool.
