Hi There,

Is it common for SVT-40's to have loose handguards? The upper portion on mine is loose and wobbles around.

If it is common what do you guys do it fix it?

Thanks

Mine is a little loose. I simply push the lower band and gas port guard back and it holds the handguard nice and tight.

I have run into some svts with really loose hand guards and I imagine a shim may work.

Mine is rattly too. On any semi-automatic rifle, any random vibrations along the barrel is asking for inconsistency.

I drew a little diagram of the contact points, pivots and freefloating pieces. The stock screw, the rear bedding surfaces, the stock latch, the bands, the female groove for the front end of one piece, etc. The ups-and-downs added up to U-shaped shims (with serifs, if you know font characteristics) inside the nose of the foreend to push up where the two top guards overlap. I also put some shims under the rear of the receiver, like bedding a Garand. I used tin snips and a scrapped stainless steel coffee cup for material.

Okay, thanks for the information.

Would it be considered cheating to put a couple of match sticks (minus sulfur ends) underneath a handgaurd to keep it in place?

Stupid question, but is your front barrel band securely in place? This could be a simple problem that would cause the handguard to become loose.

The front band on my SVT does move around a little bit. It isn't "locked" like a Mauser band would be if that is what you are referring to.
