I'm curious about shortening a fluted barrel?

What do they look like?

Are there issues with doing it?

Can the end of the barrel be threaded and have a threaded cap installed and what does that look like or will that look stupid?

Anyone have pics?

Can a NECG Masterpiece banded front sight be installed to cover the end instead of a threaded cap h ttp://www.newenglandcustomgun.com/ ???

Thanks

It could be made to look decent with a banded front. I had one on a Ruger no1 that was threaded under the band for a brake. If the barrel is big enough to do this.

Blaser and Sauer have some nice short (19-20") fluted barrels. Check out their website. IIRC the Sauer 202 Forrest has just such a barrel. The Sako Black Bear has a fluted 21 1/4" barrel with a band and open sights.

I have pondered this myself, from a safety or rigidity view there seems to be no issue. As far as looks, I thought a 1/2" taper of the flutes to the muzzle might look ok. Maybe one of the pros knows some reason why this shouldn't be done, but I can think of none.

I've seen a rifle that had been cut and a sleeve installed. I'm not sure if it was threaded or not. No real reason to thread it.

It looked ok other than the flutes end abruptly and would be hard to clean, not that that is a big deal.

If there is no flute at the 12 o'clock position I see no reason you couldn't sleeve the front inch or so and install a banded ramp.

I can post a side pic for you if you can wait for a few hours till noon here in Alberta. I have a remington which is fluted right to the end.

Here ya go,fluted right to the end. This is a remington factory barrel that was a take off.It had the expansion chamber on the end and it was cut off so the flutes ran to the end. Kinda reminds me of a pto shaft!!

The pto shaft look isn't as bad as I thought it would look, actually kind cool. I guess if you want a smooth end you could always thread and silver braze on a sleeve then touch up the flutes at the end.
