Does anyone have experience with Fred's M14 stocks? He seems to have quite a selection to choose from...

Please post some pics if you can.

Thanks

DJ

Your friend would be breaking international export laws.
Fred's deals in surplus usgi stocks and such. Has for years. He's a character and can be hard to do business with from what I've heard.
Regardless, you are better off buying a surplus usgi walnut or fiberglass stock off the CGN EE or order a Boyd's walnut from Boyd's rifle stocks, who can and will send excellent finished and unfinished M1A walnut stocks north of the border.
Put fred's and the whole "get my buddy to buy it for me' idea to bed.... There are other, legal options, for getting a decent stock. ;)

Good luck getting boyds to discount $3.99 from a finished stock to make it exportable. "Canadians" are only eligible to purchase Boyds stocks when they go "on sale" or in an "unfinished state"......seriously.

Fred owes (still  ) me $ 150 from an order he never filled from March 2003 when we initially bought the first M14's from the early batches.

So... 9 years later, I'm still waiting. Don't even bother with him. We are too annoying! What a way to do business (even back in 2003 before OIF in Iraq started).

Live and learn.....

Cheers,
barney

Agreed, he is a character. I think the fumes from linseed oil creeping out of the pores of "massive stockpiles" of gubmint sirplus stocks has convinced him that Canadians are behind plans to lead the NWO and overthrow of his civilization.

WTF is the deal with BOYD's too ... you have to get an unfinished stock so it's under $100 ... BS I say!

its pretty easy to finish a stock (i refinished an old USGI stock and it looks fantastic).
And call boyd's i've heard that that couple extra bucks can disappear for Canadian buyers to make it across the boarder

HAHA you're talking to a lad with NO skills my friend ... :p ... let's see some pics of said stock or send me a PM. ;) As for FREDS across the border ... HA good luck on that.

Thanks. I didnt know it was illegal to bring the Fred's stocks across the border.

I was leaning towards Boyd's anyways just since they have such a good rep on here.

Beauty price too!!

Any "businessman" who is that much of a "character" is not a man I would do business with and that is his loss in the end.
#### him and his whole operation I say.
I got my M1A unfinished walnut off Boyds, shipped fast to Canada with a smile.

How much tinkering would I have to do to install a Chinease reciever in the unfinished Boyds stock?

I can competantly refiish it (and would like to) but if the prefinished stocks are better internally I think I would rather get one of those so I don't have to mess around with a dremel tool inside of the stock.

Thoughs?

To be fair to Fred, it is my understanding that he DID used to do business with Canadians, until advised about the illegality of doing so with regard to USGI M-14 parts.

Treeline has some nice finished commercial wooden stocks...I put up a post about it a little while ago. It needed a little bit of fitting around the trigger guard area, but it was quite easy to do. In any case, if you are putting a Norinco action into it, even a GI stock may need a little work.

I just received my USGI refinished wood stock from treelinem14 dot com, she's a real peach! Randy installed all USGI metal parts on her together with a USGI handguard, looks real sharp! His website shows you various grades so you can pick exactly the one you're going to get. They're all hand-refinished. Got mine a week and a half after ordering.

Hi, as this is what I am looking at doing, can you direct me to the thread you found?
Thanks
Cheers

It honestly isn't that bad. You will have to sand down the right side of the stock where the Norc receiver contacts the wood under the windage knob towards the rear.
The Norc receivers are slanted slightly (not flat) so if you want it to sit flush you will need to sand the wood slightly. No big deal.
The only other part I found a bit finicky when I transfered all the Chinese metal to the M1A stock was putting the metal liner in. It's a bit tricky to hold it in place so the holes line up properly and screw the locking screws in.
Another note, you will need to buy a $5 dollar front swivel screw set and a front metal stock cap for another $5-$10.
It's next to impossible to get the metal cap off the Norc stock without damaging it as it is "staked" in place. Even if you manage to pry it off, you will not get it back on the tight tolerance M1A stock with a proper fit.
Hope this helps you in any way man.
Cheers!
