So I'm trying to read up on the differences, pro's and con's of each and I keep getting a bunch of technical mumbo jumbo that's hard to decipher.

Can anyone educate me on the differences? I notice alot of the Performance Center S&W's use a Scandium alloy frame, pro's ands con's over stainless steel?

Any help would be great....

Scandium is a soft metal with a silvery appearance, It develops a slightly yellowish or pinkish cast when oxidized by air.

I dont know alot about it but the frames from S&W are an alloy of it and aluminum.

My guess is that Stainless would hold up better, although there are some aerospace companies that use them in jets, so who knows

scandium alloys have a very good strength to weight ratio, better than aluminium by itself

scandium vs stainless steel? about the same strength but much lighter with the scandium
a stainless frame will hold up better over 50 000 rounds im sure, but its not an issue unless you are shooting 20k or more a year through the gun

I just recently picked up a S&W 386 XL Hunter. Its nearly a pound lighter than a similar 686 and obviously there is more felt recoil. My 386 came coated so I won't able to tell if it discolors over time.

If you don't like recoil then stick with the stainless (heavier) frames.

-Advantage- Scandium: much lighter handguns, easier to CCW for USA gun owners.

-Disadvantage- Scandium: significantly stronger recoil, especially in revolvers that shoot 44 Magnum, like Smith& Wesson 329 models.
