.300 Blackout SBR project completed...

Nice little gun. Curious about the legality of the barrel though.
You said that because a gunsmith made it, that it was ok, but does the gunsmith need to have any special certification as a manufacturer, or can any gunsmith do this?

I had the same concerns as you did. What you need to do is read the legal definitions of Restricted and Prohibited firearms word for word and see for yourself that installing an aftermarket barrel blank shorter than 18" is not illegal.

In fact, I started a thread on this exact topic listed below. I was confused in hearing everyone's interprtation on this as "opinions" were vastly different. In the end, I contacted the RCMP lab myself and they replied to me in writing that it was permissable. The thread link is: http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum...d.php?t=569190

In any event, glad you asked. There's so much confusion about our firearms laws it's good to have solid information at hand.

thanks, that one worked fine.
I see that you've done your homework on this. Just keep that letter handy, and if you get it registered before the end of the registry, keep the certificate too, just in case.

You are correct sir. Case capacity is important because 10gr of pistol powder gets lost in a big case which can result in inconsistent and even dangerous ignition problems. That can be overcome somewhat by using a specialized powder but in the end subsonic 308 has a much lower accuracy potential than the 300 Whisper can achieve.

Because the Whisper case is so much smaller it also loses much less velocity in a short barrel than a full sized cartridge.

The 308 case volume is equivalent to adding 1.5-2" of barrel length.

Bulky powders don't get lost in the case. Trailboss and TinStar give good accuracy and low SDs in short barrel 308s. Case fill is also good with RN bullets as they get seated deep into the case.

IMR SR 4759 with a 220 gr. round nose gives low SDs and amazing groups out of even regular length 308 barrels since its slower burning. Unfortunately, even a 1-10 twist doesn't stabilize them in anything but the hottest weather. SR 4759 is best described as a stick version of Trailboss. The kernels are hollow little tubes, and it is very bulky.

The 308 can be made to work well subsonic with a short barrel and proper powder and bullet selection(which are much more limited). But, only as a single shot. It will not cycle a semi auto with those powders. That is where the Whisper shines.

cool! all i need is to do it now!think 15" barrel will get me two ! for the price of one!

Here's a nice video of the AI mags being used in a 700 chambered in .300 Blackout. Doesn't appear to be any issues at all. Not that you would expect any though it's good to know before hand.

Well the video didn't show him cycling the bolt, so?....I don't see why it wouldn't though

Well, you're right. Aren't you? Since we didn't get to see him cycling the bolt how will we know he actually loaded and fired real ammunition? How do we know those "shots" weren't added in the video in post-production?

i was just saying....sheesh:cool:
you posted a video comfirming 300 bo loads from AI mags....the video didn't show that, i don;t think you watched the video before you posted...so chill dudeV:I:....actaully the way the ammo was laid out on the bench and the video was about noise levels with different ammo, i bet he was single feeding rounds:rolleyes:

Yeah, I watched it before I posted it. And I know something you don't. There's no issues what so ever in using AI mags with .300 Blackout. There's a number of documented builds of guys using this mag system in 700's chambered in this cartridge.

I looked into doing a AI mag conversion but decided against it as the cost outweighed the benefits for my purposes. I didn't need it and could care less if it didn't look "tacti-cool".

The owner of the rifle in the video is not likely to install a $300 DM system that DID NOT work, now is he? If it failed to perform, it's not a big deal to switch back to the factory floor plate magazine. There'd be no eason for him to even leave it on the rifle.
