Wanted to hear from people that have hunted up in Cochrane Ontario. I bought 73 acres of land up there, I will eventually build a cabin on it.... From what I hear there is alot of great hunting up this way (along with fishing).....so for those of you that have been up this way how is the hunting from your experience?:shotgun:

My trip in February directly facing into the property.

Now one of the reasons I picked this land is it already has a driveway and drilled well as someone lived here 10-15 years ago (to the left is a abandoned trailer...my firewood!) and electrical and telephone are on the road if/when I decide to add this to my future cabin!

We've hunted moose in Hearst (Fushimi Lake area) for the past few years. Pulled 3 bull moose out in 5 years.

Cochrane is probably similar for wolves/bears/moose. (But better terrain)

Im an hour away, hunting can be very good depending on what you are looking for and Ill echo what 44fordy said. Terrain is lower/swampier than Here. They even have Sharptail grouse. Also about the southern limit for Woodland Caribou but I dont' think we will ever be able to hunt them in Ontario during our lifetime.

Thanks for the input from everyone. It is a great area for the outdoorsman that is certain and with 73 acres and millions of acres of crown lands nearby it should beat traipsing around the over-crowded Ottawa area! I am going up for a few days around the end of May and talk some with the locals. Have to invest in a snowmobile as well as it seems that is the majority of traffic in the winter.

There is a few good places to eat in Cochrane, although the steak at the Spinning Wheel if its still there is abit salty. The Husky I think has a nice breakfast in the morning cheap. If you go to the train area there is a Tim Hortons museum on one of the permanent cars.

I hunted moose up toward Detour for a number of yrs.
Lots of bears & wolves.
Used to be lots of moose, we quit 5 or so yrs ago when tags became IMPOSSIBLE to get in MNRs unfair tag system
No point even attempting a bull tag, outfitters have them all.
Fishing is good as long as you can stand the flys :)

Better buy a good set of waterproof boots as well - you are going to find out what life in the clay belt is like! Depending where you are, not a lot of lakds, more sand towards Iroqouis Falls country. Lots of space for hunting. Very hard to get moose tags in WMU 28 !

If you're headed up highway 11 to get to camp you've got to hit the cheese factory just north of New Liskeard, about 15min past the big cow. Best cheese curd around.

There is a special moose draw for northern residents but I'm not sure if that applies only to residents or landowners as well. A friends got a cabin up past larder lake and the grouse and hare were great last fall. Didn't see any moose then but saw a young bull and a mom and calf at Christmas near Kirkland lake.

Congrats on the land purchase and good luck.

Thornloe Cheese!!!!!!!!!

Try the BBQ cheese curds if they still have them. We use to plan our trips, so that we would be in Thornloe when the store was open. (That wasn't easy with a 1 y/o traveling from Toronto to Thunder Bay(ish) every 2 months).

Can still hunt moose calves without going through the draw.

Well that is good to know, that may be a great alternative.

MMMMM Cheese......that is definately something I will plan on my trips both to and from the property......

That woul take some good timing to make that from Toronto....it takes 8 hours to Cochrane from Ottawa.....the nice thing is it is al highway driving so it seems to go by quickly....even the kids didnt complain....and thats saying something!

Do you have any creeks/ponds/rivers/lakes on or near your land ?

A lot of guys are running Argos in the Cochrane/Kap/Hearst north hwy Corridor...Im pretty sure you will see why pretty soon, although from the pics you posted above your lot should not be too bad.

Getting Black Bear coming into a bait on the back portion would be pretty easy too if you dont' mind that type of hunting. dont' even have to have him com in to your lot since you are likely backed into tons of crown land.

From the topographical map the land is sitting high with no signs of water on it. To the north a pond and creek, the east is munroe creek, a few miles to the east is brower creek a little further east is Abitibi River.

Within a few minutes drive of the land there is Genier Lake, Dora Lake, Lauzon Lake not to mention the other hundreds of various sized lakes around the area....

So the land itself is quite dry but has lots of water in the lands around it.....good for a cabin!

Sounds like a nice parcel. If you are building a cabin, best to pay a local to watch it while you are not there. Or build it from cinder block and steel bars...

Used to live in the area back in the late 80's and early 90's. Fishing and hunting can be pretty good and through some backroads exploring you'll find places you will consider as favorites. If you are into bears there is no shortage of them, buddies of mine up there get some incredible bear hunting. Moose are in good abundance but tags are tough to get. Especially in WMU 28 as mentioned. There is some fantastic fishing in the area, especially up on the big lake(Abitibi). I hope you have a great time exploring your new surroundings and figuring out the area. Congrats on your purchase.:)

Yes I have been thinking about this definitely will make it hard to get into to....was also looking at Costco for their surveillance systems as power and telephone will be there.....I will be able to check on the land at anytime through the computer....systems run for less than $500.....will have to cross that bridge when I get there I guess!
