1957 Model 12 field grade bought here on GN. Gun had been restored. Cycles shells without firing fine, action feels silky smooth. Fire the gun and the action locks up solid, cannot remove shell or move slide. Happened on first shot after purchase and first shot after getting it back from the gunsmith. It goes back in tomorrow to the smith for another look.
Different ammunition both times. Ideas from model 12 experts please??
Thanks in advance,
Paul

After firing, push forward on the forearm. This is normal for the Model 12, and a couple others. You can try this at home without ammo.

This was a way that Winchester helped keep the action closed in case of a hang fire.

If you look at your action slide at the point where it meets the forend wood the shank should come straight back if it has a step in it then you need to replace it with the straight version, It is called the dog leg action slide it causes the exact problem you are speaking of. Google Model 12 Winchester dog leg action slide . all kinds of info.

Thanks Lodi, unfortunately the slide will not move in either direction, it is locked up. I will check out the other suggestions as well but it is back to the gunsmith this morning. Thanks for the input guys and I will put this on the shotgun section later. This is my second model 12 and I had no issues at all with the first one.

Check the twist lock threads on the magazine tube, it is possible that they wear enough to cause this problem. It happened to a 12 I bought many years ago that would be about the same vintage as yours.

The gunsmithing forum may be a better place?

Will the slide release if you use the release button?

If a spring is broken or bent on the slide release mechanism, it will not automatically release the slide on firing.

The other problem it may be involves the chamber and the headspace ring and can be a very expensive fix requiring tooling worth $1000.
