What would you suggest for the new rifle for the Rangers.
As they have chosen the 308 as the cartridge, what rifle would replace the reliability of the Lee-Enfield.
If there are any rangers out there, lets here from you.

RRCo. Thanks for the links, I am so far behind I think I am coming in first.

I have read that the reason that they are changing rifles is the original Enfield"s are starting to run out and the ammunition supply in also short if you can believe that.
It would be nice to know the real reason.

I would say that considering this is an armed service, part of the canadian army, and not some Discovery channel expedition( Winchester's and Ruger's:eek:)for a bunch of Americans to the high Canadian arctic, and the likelyhood of an engagement in the High Arctic with some foreign aggressor possibly rare, I would pick a fine rifle already made in Canada:canadaFlag:. It would be nice to tote it all day and never know it's there!

Something battle proven, accurate, reliable, low recoil, ease of maintenance and training, lightweight, short and compact, easy choice betwen optics or aperture sights attachment, a large battle ammo load out if required,....which brings us to the Colt Canada C-8.

Only two drawbacks with this

1 Big Polar Bears and only a 556,

2 Full Auto. Maybe a S/A lower for the rangers.

Think the Ruger Gunsite is tough enough? They are having trouble with the polymer mags (which probably wouldn't work to good in the really cold north) If your using the AI mags you can not top up the magazine in the rifle. I like the adjustable stock but the front sight isn't adjustable in any way, kinda the reverse of the Lee Enfield. Also needs a finer front sight. Yes I know its made for a scope but why not try and get the best you can. And yes I own a Ruger, many Lee Enfields and a couple of the Australian Copies of the No4. A M10-B1 and a No4 Mk4

Jeez these ranger rifles are becoming as common as the bear defence threads!

I think something in .308 with irons would be good. The Enfield is a good design and rifle for the job so maybe a .308 enfield? I don't know about semi reliability in the cost but possible and m14 (not any norinco crap, thank you very much).

Dust the old Longbranch tooling off. Set it up. Tweak the process so it's a 308 barrel and mag, and a more modern sporter stock.

Build the first 10,000 for the rangers.

Build the next 100,000 for a civilian defence project.

Build another 100,000 for civilian/international sales.

Likely with the civilian sales you could break even, or perhaps make some money on the project.

I like your thinking, that would be pretty cool if it was possible

Single shot Coey Model 39. Reliable and we are just out of a recession.....

If polar bears are a REAL concern, we'll give then pepper spray!

Nothing like peppery polar bear farts..... :)

What the hell...the Rangers still haven't got new rifles yet? Hasn't this been going on for like 4 years? #### I could have bought them all new SPS SS's by now, and I'm a poor sum #####.
