Hey guys, I recently ordered my first handgun and i'm looking at aqcuiring a safe immediately. I'm looking at the SAF 1, and the Gun Vault GV2000 deluxe, not the biometric model. I like the SAF because it uses a mechanical lock and the holster is a nice feature, however the GV2000 is more of a safe where you can store other valuables as well. I'd appreciate any input into the matter, brand does not matter to me.

I got the crappy tire stack on for 99 bucks. While not truly a safe it works for me. Bolted to the wall in my closet it would be a bugger to steal without my neighbours hearing. I am happy with it. Spend what ya want and be happy
I would prefer a big a$$ real safe but no room.
 
I've used a Firesafe from Wal-Mart, A Stack-On pistol safe I got at Canadian Tire that was on sale for $40, but mostly I just trigger lock them in locked pistol cases in my gun room with a locked door. It's all legal so who really cares how fancy it is. You can buy another pistol for the price of some of these safes and if a thief breaks in to your home they are going to take it no matter what it's in unless it's in one of those $2000+ safes that weigh 500 pounds.

If it is stolen it's sure to be recovered quickly by the police because it's registered with the firearms registry;) If not there is always insurance.

Buy what you want and can afford, as long as it's legal it's all good.
 
I bought the GunVault deluxe pistol safe from 911supply.ca in Calgary.
I quite like it, works great, very quick access to my pistol.
Has worked well since last June.
 
There is a Barska biometric rifle safe on sale on amazon.ca - price includes shipping - with some shelving it would be great for pistol. Was $606 on for $293. I agree you will run out of room with a small safe.
 
+1 for buy a rifle safe. How much room do you have? There's a million Costco safe threads and the general consensus is they're good for the money @ $350 on sale. I've got one and other than a hinge that needed to be freed up (spray lube'd) it's great. 270lbs and attaches to the wall.
 
The only security I need is enough to know my daughter can't get into it, not that she would try. And it needs to be secure enough to be legal. If your house gets broken into they are taking whatever they want. They will drag your safe out into the truck and open it later. You lock them up to satisfy the law not secure them from criminals.
If you want it to be truly secure you will have to spend over $2000 on a huge rifle safe that weighs over 500 pounds and have it securely anchored into the concrete in your basement. Anything less and your just fooling yourself. Criminals don't care if they ruin your drywall or the studs behind it. They will use crowbars and the safe is gone unless it's too heavy to carry by a couple guys.
 
If you do not bolt it down or to the wall it can be knocked over to make it easier to pry open by being able to put all of your wight on a pry bar.
 
Hey guys, appreciate the advice. However I found a smoking deal online for the gunvault multivult deluxe that I couldn't pass at 148USD shipped with the safety cable. As much as I would love to have a full sized safe, but right now its not feasible in anyway especially financially. When I buy my first long gun I will most likely store it in a hard case locked up tightly since I have a few of them kicking around.

Trigger locked in a locked case is legal. Anything more is just for your warm and fuzzy feeling.
I like keeping them in the cases I take to the range I leave a photo copy of my ATT and the registration under the foam as well. Makes it quick and easy to pack up on range day

Me to. If I don't get to the range within 4 weeks or so, I check the cases for moisture and wipe them all down.
