YOU'VE GOT TO SEE THIS!! (largest coyote ever shot in Newfoundland)

I would also like to see DNA testing to be sure because it does resemble a wolf to me also, but, don't forget that the Eastern Coyote (which is what we have in Atlantic Canada) is a Coyote - Wolf hybrid, they do resemble wolves and get much bigger then they're western cousin, though this one being 82 lbs I really would like to see some DNA testing, which I think will be done.

The telegram piece says that wildlife has taken some blood and hair samples so it looks like we'll know for sure soon, either way I'll still be amazed, we haven't had wolves here for many years and the ones we did have were white wolves, so we'll have to wait and see.

My money is on Eastern Coyote (Coyote Wolf Hybrid)

It USED to be that the Wolf was the only predator of the Coyote,but now it's at a point where the Wolves are interbreeding with Coyotes and the result is the "Eastern Coyote" which are larger in size.The Eastern Coyote is now taking on certain traits of the Wolf and also have adapted to hunting in packs.

Taken at face value, and given the time of year, it suggests a mate. So is the mate a coyote or another wolf far from home?
 
I would say its a wolf also but aside from that it sounds like this guy did a hell of a job tracking and hunting this beast.Congrats, that will make a great mount.

Coyotes are running unchecked and breed almost like rabbits.They are becoming more brazen than ever and are losing their fear of man.The more they feel their population is threatened,the more they breed,they are a highly adaptable animal and will have bigger litters.This is the one reason why we try to avoid a cull,it's been tried and has been a failure in many instances.

Different muzzle, not coyote canine teeth, shorter ears than yote.

Also the weight would be about twice an average yote.

here's a site where you can see the difference's in a coyote and wolf foot pads, I'd say it would be almost impossible for anyone to tell that the animal in that picture is a wolf by looking at the pads (other then size) but then like some of us already know the Eastern Coyote is much larger then it's Western cousin.

They are likely just saying its a "coyote" so people keep shooting them. Soon as the word "Wolf" comes out, Everyone is up in arms saying "we need to save them, blah blah blah"



There was actually a full blown wolf shot about an hour away from here. They called the ministry and showed them it, they said its a coyote, you can shoot on sight, all year long, no bag limits.


This thing was a 100lb blackish grey WOLF, with a big block head, not even close to a coyote.

The strait is frozen pretty good this year. With 9/10ths concentration of sea ice.

I'm from Southern Labrador, wolves are pretty common once you get away from the barrens around the strait. I don't doubt that a wolf could have traveled across in recent years.

The last wolf seen on the island was shot in the 20's or 30's. The government removed the bounty on wolves on the island in the 60's. Conservation at it's best.
 
Just going to put this out there... but doesn't newfoundland have a massive moose population problem that could be partially moderated by having wolves around.... stands to reason since wolves are being blamed for population crashes everywhere else in Canada... so why not put their skills to use rather than shooting on sight?

Edit - fairly certain I'm going to get flamed for this, but I still don't get the whole "shoot predators because they (supposedly) eat everything/I hate them with a passion" thing.

Were they not recently talking about culling moose in Newfoundland because of over population? I'm assuming you disagree with me but if you can provide some alternate evidence I'm willing to consider, but have yet to see or hear any evidence to the contrary.
 
It's a Wolf/Coyote hybrid,more commonly recognized as a "Coywolf".
They have made their way to the Eastern most provinces and it's not as uncommon as you might think.From what I know of this,is that the interbreeding began to take place somewhere in Northern Ontario/Northern Quebec.Being that Quebec has the closest proximity to Labrador it shouldn't be too hard to understand the logic behind it.
Here in N.S. I have seen Coyotes as big as 50-60lbs, which is about average.

We did introduce moose hunts in both national parks on the island this past season, because their very high concentrations there are basically destroying the habitat. But the island does NOT have a moose problem, contrary to what you might hear from fringe elements like the 'Save the People Action Committee' or those behind the class action lawsuit against government because of moose-vehicle accidents. I've raved against all that nonsense in the OT and News subforums before.
