YOU'VE GOT TO SEE THIS!! (largest coyote ever shot in Newfoundland)

The majority of Newfies don't like when Canadians ridicule them.....which happens wayyy too often. Sort of a sensitive issue. But that's a topic for the independence forums....

But back to our animal. The hunter said he saw it with a small coyote. But he says this is a large coyote. I think it's possible that he saw a pair of wolves and assumed they were coyotes, because everyone knows there's no wolves on the island. Or maybe one of the local coyote girls took a shine to the lone wolf renegade. Ever see the movie Valley Girl?

I have seen lots of these Coy-wolves around here ( I live 75 km south of Clarenville). Nothing this size though. Most I have seen are only 2/3 the size of this.

We're not expecting to see a wolf in NL. It's an island, and the Newfoundland Wolf, as mentioned, has been extinct since the 1930s. I know there is one stuffed in a museum here. In the woods, not so many.

Did anyone look at that picture and think anything other than 'that's a wolf'?

I know I didn't.

There are many wolves in NL. NL is not an island, it is a province called Newfoundland and Labrador that is 2/3rds wolf infested. Newfoundland is an island that, in most people's opinion, is wolf free.

When wolves inhabited the island, they were specialists who only preyed on caribou. The crash in caribou population in the first half of the 20th century is one of the main reasons for their decline. At their peak, there were only about 400 wolves on the island. This is from a book I read recently called Newfoundland Wildlife Delights and Dilemmas by Neil Payne.
 
I took a coyote hunting course a while back and the instructors told us the coyotes in NFLD have a lot of wolf in 'em. After seeing that on the news, I tend to believe 'em.

Obviously I made a Typo with the 'new' NL.

I am aware that Labrador has wolves, and also that this animal was shot on the island of Newfoundland, which does not.

I removed my reply as well, no offense meant here to Newfies and I'd rather keep this on topic. It's an old trapping joke and is used with any nationality.

Did you hear about the (insert nationality) fox?

He chewed off three paws and was still caught in the trap.
 
Actually, the last Newfoundland Wolf was killed in 1911, they were officially declared extinct in 1930.

The facial features certainly look more like a wolf than a coyote to me too, it will be interesting to see what they come up with. However, there are some big coyotes here. These 2 were killed on the Northern Pen by a buddy of mine. He claimed the were in the 70 lb range, I cannot confirm that they actually were, but they certainly look to be fairly big in the picture.

Im not a political man, but if theres wolves in NFL then they probably have been planted there by some tree hugging political leaders that would rather introduce wolves, than incease big game tag quotas...

When too many pets, livestock and people have been lost to preadators, I hope they can "anti up"... LOL..:cool:

The moose tag quotas are going up, and its not a good thing. :(
 
CBC has posted a another article on the subject but there is little new info. Testing is expected to take around a week.
