Why cheap targets ?

If you're shooting competition, you are actually encouraged NOT to look for your shots. That's what shot calling is for. Same reason for not having exploding targets, or any target marks for that matter. Anything that takes focus from the front sight is to be avoided.

even when shooting steel this is true, if you rely on the sound then you are going to be slower than being able to tell if you had a good sight picture or not
 
Accuracy means consistancy - you need to shoot groups. Doesnt matter where ONE shot goes, it matters where 3 or 5 go. No point chasing shots around if you are causing the problem. Focus on the sights, shoot a group then check it.

Also paper plates make great cheap targets, same size as 'A' zones :)
