I have a marlin 1936 that has no letters before the serial # and is only 4 digits does this mean it was man 1936 to 1940, and is there anyway to narrow it down more
thanks

Model 1936: 1936 to 1941.
30-30, 32 Special
The 1936 had case colored receivers & Model 1936 on upper tang.
1936 1st series production (no letter prefix serial numbers) had flat mainspring, fluted comb buttstock, perch belly forearm, hard rubber buttplate w/slotted screws. Starting in 1937, this model was listed in Marlin's Catalogs as the Model 36 and was only there referred to as the 36. The gun itself was still stamped Model 1936 until sporting arms production was discontinued in 1941. Serial numbers located on the lower tang under the lever.
B-prefix series: Changes to unfluted comb & beavertail forearm, hard rubber buttplate w/ phillips screws, upper tang was shortened and the use of coil mainsprings vice leaf mainsprings. 1941 Production.

No Letter Prefix-1936 to 1940
B-1941

Would realy need to know what the serial number is and barrel address in order to narrow it down.

thanks very informative:D

What you have is Model 1936 Carbine, as you have said that the magazine tube goes all the way to the end of the barrel. I would say that by the serial # it is likely produced 1938 to 1940 but that is just my opinion. I have seen higher numbers without any letter prefix and have seen a lot lower numbers and have heard of some 3 digit number 1936. I have noticed that you have posted on the Marlin Collector site looking for some information, we can wait and see what some of the experts there say. There are members that are much more knowledgable than me about the study of the Model 1936.

The following photos shows the 3 different models of the 1936.
These guns are in my collection are PCMR marked and were used by the Pacific Coast Millitia Rangers during WWII
The white spacer on the bottom guns butt plate is not correct and has since been changed to the correct one.

those are awesome very nice, mine is not in nice shape, function perfect but my aunts exhusband engraved to and from on it in a very ugly sloppy way on it unfortunately, im trying to decide what to do with it,seems like it would be a shame to put duracoat on it,might try and find a engraver to put nice pic of wildlife and hide it.Thanks i will put pic up when camera is charged

I actually have a model 1936 sporting carbine in 32 special. It's in great shape but someone varnished the stock years ago I am want to strip it and refinish it with something but I really don't know what to put on it. The date information listed here so far is correct the B prefix came in 1941 so that puts the rifle between 1936 and 1940 sometime.

It is strange how the serial numbers must have started over again, with the Model 336. I have a ballard rifled Marlin marked Model 336 RC. Barrel is 20 inches with the magazine coming 5 inches from the muzzle. Serial number is on the lower tang and is E613X.
I think that puts the date of manufacture at 1948.

You are correct E is 1948.

Model 336: June 1948 to present.
219Zipper, 30-30, 307 Win?, 32 Special, 35 Remington, 356 Win, 38-55, 375 Win, & 44 Mag. Early serial numbers located on the lower tang under the lever. Later ones on upper tang. These serial codes also work for the 22lr leverguns as well.
