Need scope options

Hi,

I have a Savage 30-06 rifle, the one that comes with a bushnell 3-9x40.

I am looking to upgrade the scope. I know if I go to my local shop they will try and sell me the most expensive one.

Keep in mind the rifle and original scope cost $450 new.

This is my hunting rifle and used at the 100 yrd range as well.

The reason for the upgrade I believe the current scope is broken. The scope will not hold zero anymore.

Advice, help?

Tim, if you are sure that the problem is your scope, rather than loose rings or bases, you should take it in to the Bushnell repair/warranty facility located in Markham (I don't recall the street name...you'll have to look it up).

Despite what you may hear from the Bushnell-haters on this site, I have taken a few scopes in to them, some of them very old, and they have replaced or repaired every one while I waited. The service has been excellent.

Even if you do upgrade, the repaired/replaced scope will be a nice spare, or you could use it elsewhere.

As for your local shop, I think I know who you mean. It would definitely be worth your while to take a drive up to Port Perry and check out Williams' Arms instead. Great guys, knowledgeable, and best of all completely honest and trustworthy.

I got same rifle a few years back, it came with Simmons scope thou - wouldn't hold zero either. Replaced it with Nikon ProStaff (cheap but good scope) in 3-9x40 with BDC and it's working very well, no issues, clear glass, etc. Paid for the scope $150 back then, on sale.

Sounds like a plan to follow.You have a good gun,but the optics not so.
 
If you are looking to replace than look at Bushnell. Bushnell is bringing in a new and improved line and the old stuff is on sale all over the place. I picked up an Elite 3200 3-9x40 for $250.00 and I couldn't be happier. I think that the price has gone down since then to near $200.00.
 
Boulevard is right about the Bushnell Elites. The 3200s are good, and at the sale prices they are very good value. Also very good value are the new Redfield Revolutions backed by transferable lifetime warranty from Leupold. A 3-9x40 will be plenty for your needs and may be found under $200 retail. The current production Weavers made in Japan are also very good scopes, in my experience, with lifetime warranty to original owner, and Vortex scopes are competitive on price and lots of Gunnutz say they are really pleased with them.
 
TheTooner.Are the Redfields comparable to the vx1,or vx11 or what do you think they would compare to in a leupold.Have looked through inside only.Thanks Gary.
 
The Redfield I used (briefly sampling a friend's Savage Axis .30-06) impressed me, knowing the price they sell at and that they have the widely-praised Leupold warranty. I haven't actually used a Leupold so I can't say how they compare optically. I have read comments by a few users on here that they are as good as low end Leupolds, so with lower prices that's pretty good value.

I don't think that Redfield was better (or worse) than my Weaver V9 Classic (3-9x38) but the Weaver's lifetime warranty is limited to the original owner, while the Redfield/Leupold isn't.

Myself and a few people I hunt with use that savage rifle/scope combo and we all found locktite on the screws for the rings and bases has fixed the problem of not holding zero.
 
This package rifle have a very good rifle, the rings and the scope are ok but this rifle deserve very good glass and rings as it is a shooter out of the box, did build a 300 mag that will last a lifetime and give nothing to more expensive rig, check my tread on building a 300 mag... JP.

Bushnell hater here... And you just proved my point... I don't care how good their service is... My scopes belong on my rifles and not in their repair shop... I am a hunter and I don't need that trophy buck getting away or evn worse getting wounded and getting away because my crappy bushnell scope won't hold zero... Go with a more reputable name and never look back op...
 
Id be looking at Redfield, Nikon, Bushnell and Vortex if you're looking for bang for your buck. I just replaced a package scope with a 3200. If that hadn't been on sale either a Redfield Revolution or Nikon Prostaff 2 would have been my choice I think.
