Hey guys. I'm a bit of a glass/sight newb here, and I'm looking to setup my NEA15.

What am I looking for? Something that can reach out to 100 yards, but at the same time, that I can run some MBUS off to the side or something similar for "close range engagements" :p.

Everything in perspective, I figure a $800-$900 budget will be right on par for some mid-level glass and some sort of system to set up the MBUS.

Actually now that I think of it, I do remember reading in the Black Rifles section something about 45 degree angled MBUS....

100 yards? aimpoint t1 or h1. or any aimpoint for that matter, or eotech or save a little more a go for a trijicon accupoint with 1-4.

Get a decent low powered variable. 1-4, 1 1/2-5, etc. Illuminated reticle if you want colour. Perfectly useful from very close to several hundred meters. Not tackykewl, but does the job. No point getting a sight that limits the rifle.

Regardless of choice, the limiting factor is the shooter not the gear.

I have the PRO on my NEA. Love it.

To stay in the same price range if wanting glass, go with the Falcon Menace 1-4 and a proper mount.

Or there is the Lucid HD Red Dot, which you can purchase the screw in x3 Mag, or purchase the flip away magnifier.

Also, learn to shoot with iron sights first.

Thus my point of wanting both MBUS and glass.

Practise with the irons. Use the glass for when the zombies come.

"Also, learn to shoot with iron sights first."

Why? Does the CF teach iron sights first, then the use of the C79?

The whole point of BUIS is "back up". Secondary, emergency sights. Get a good optical sight. Learn to use it. If you think it is necessary, have a backup system to be used in the event of a failure of the primary system. This can be particularly important if the primary sight is battery dependent. Know how to use them. But the BUIS is for secondary and emergency use.

^I looked the other month and they were good to go with them, but then the Aimpoint deal came up.

Vortex may be how I go.

Just because the gov guys do something doesn't make it right. They use the Elcan which should be your first clue. they also think 3 point slings are a viable option, that's your second clue. Their issue BUIS are plastic, that's your third clue. Infantry and all gov employees are disposable, that's your fourth clue.

I fully agree that an optic trumps irons and the operator should be very comfortable with it. However, there isn't much point in having a "backup" set of sights if you can't run them effectively. The difference between primary and secondary/backup sighting options, should be performance based, not comfort level.

I always tell a new shooter to learn to shoot with irons.

Its a basic fundamental part of shooting. I have an AR upper right now that only has fixed irons. No optic.

Only because I can't decide what optic for this set up, but very comfy with the irons on their own.
