Hi to everyone..

I realize that this is not the EE.. but what i am doing is trying to get some ideas where i can get a S&W 625 revolver... I am trying to get an IDPA ESR.. and not having any luck...

I looked on the S&W website and they only have 4 inch barrels.. Doh.. not in Kanukistan.

I even looked on some american gun action sites and there are lots of 625s.. but again all 4 inch barrels..

There was one on the EE a week or so ago and i just missed it..

So what can i do.. cant buy a 4 inch revolver.. as i am not a prohib license holder..

What are the other options... i just cant think of any other options.. was hoping someone else might be able to come up with something..

Thanks

RDG

Option #1: Find a 625 with a longer barrel and have it cut down to 106mm.

Option #2: Buy one with a 4" barrel and send it out to a gunsmith who will make a new 106mm barrel and install it.

I hate those smug 12(6) guys, too. ;):D

The problem is i cant buy a 625 12(6) There are plenty of them in the states.. but getting them here is problematic..

How easy is it to get barrels 5" or 6" for the 4 inch prohib in .45 caliber???

If i could find a 625 6" i wouldn't hesitate to cut it to 4.2 " BUT.. they are hen's teeth as well.. LOL

Does anyone know how many guns does S&W need to sell to make a Canadian version, a 4.2" barrel 625...

Thanks

I hear ya man. Quite a while ago, it seems they were popping up on the EE every 2 days. Now, nothing. I think they're cool, and some day I'll get one, but it's not too high on the list right now.

(E)

Not that much, really. The Canadian market is fairly small, and the market within that is smaller yet. The 4.2" revolvers they build for the California market would be a much larger order, sadly. I'd still like to have one to go with it's snubby cousins in 357,41,and 44 gracing the safe. - dan

So i guess i should retitle "How to buy a prohib and get it rebarreled"?

Ok.. From the discussion here..

1. S&W will not bother producing 4.2 inch barrels for the Canadian market... not big enough.

2. There are lots of 4 inch 625 revolvers for sale south of the Border.

So the collective opinion is that one could rebarrel a prohib to a longer legal Canadian barrel. I would like to hear from someone if it is possible to import a prohib to have it rebarreled?
So one needs to have a method to import.. (Prophet river?)
Am i able to import a prohib without having a 12(6)?
Where can i get a 4.2" barrel? or can someone just make one up? Cost?

I just realized there may be another way. Is it possible to weld a .25 inch ring on the end of the barrel to make it legal?
There was a Revolver on the EE awhile back where there was a small ring welded onto the end of the barrel.. I just about bought it...
Can this be an option for other revolvers?
It would look kind of odd but would give the right length if allowed by the powers that be...

S&w made a batch for 686 revolvers with 4.2" barrels for the canadian market, so your first point it wrong, they just need an order the right size order

Get a 5", they're here, just post a W-T-B or hold out the right cheese and someone will bite.

I found a 5" barrel just a week after I sold my prohib 625. Only paid about $200 for the barrel, it was pretty minty.

Or, if you're more ambitious and richer, there are plenty of 3" 625s around. You line up the S&W guru (maybe Murray Charlton on Vancouver Island) and he can get everything greased up, the barrel found, etc. You buy your prohib but the seller ships to your S&W guru. Barrel gets changed out, status changed out, wallet changed out.

You get a 5" but it costs a bit more. You know for sure you're getting one, instead of waiting and hoping and watching "The Secret".

The minute you get everything ready to convert a prohib to restricted, it's pretty much certain that a nice, inexpensive 5" will drop from the sky. So get busy... sounds like everyone wants one!

+1

Nice thing about getting Charlton to do the rebarrel is that you can get an action job done (HIGHLY recomended) and he can get a genuine Smith 5 inch barrel (it may take a while, but he can order parts direct).

Not too sure what the attraction is to the 625 specifically. I'm fond of most any Smith wheelgun so I'd like to add one eventually but it's not on my high list.

I've been offered one in mint shape, 5" Lew Horton special in .45 LC, for $1,500. A bit rich for me at the moment, I just indulged in a 617 and 686 (both no dash pre-locks with GA targets and Patridge fronts, they look like twins :)), and a gorgeous M1917.
