I see lots of threads on sks's here I've put a tapco on mine and had optics on it but it refused to retain zero due to mount issues so I took it off.
I'm just wondering if there's any way to reduce weight? It's not excessively heavy but every ounce counts.
I'm going to add a peep sight to it in the near future, unless any nutz can suggest something different.

the only true way to mount optics is to side mount solid as a rock and the way it was meant too
as far as glamouring it up i myself think the wood look is the best look, I have refinished all of mine just to get rid of the terrible shelac and finish with a nice dull oil and maybe a steel top guard some peep sights and if you want to get really crazy :) an extended butt pad and an aftermarket mag but when your done the rifle still looks somewhat original no what i mean?? the tactical look is an akward look for the SKS in my opinion, don't get me wrong I have done it myself but it was short lived
the most important thing you need to do to the SKS is SHOOT IT!!!!! and have fun

For weight:

Take off the bayo and the cleaning rod. I've seen some where the bayo lug was even cut off... Just the bayo and cleaning rod make a big difference in weight.

I wouldn't customize a Russian, a Chinese is just asking to be messed up in this way. I wouldn't scope any SKS, personally.

when the bolt slams backwards into the frame , it will beat the cr*p out of the optics .

i have no idea who sells a recoil buffer , but that is something you might want to look into , as well as some sort of soild scope mount ( a side mout directly mounted to the frame would possibly be the best option ) .

also be aware that even when you gets things in order , your gun may still seem to not hold zero due to the shotgun type groupings they get .

The SKS is a great all purpose, service rifle, with irons. Once you start trying to make it into something it's not, you run into problems. Why customize a rifle with things that may or may not be functional. It's a $170 rifle (for a really nice one). Shoot corrosive for cheap and have fun.

Recoil Buffer

Side scope mount, sold out right now.

For the OP, I agree with the others... mess with a Chinese SKS all you want, but leave the Russian copies alone :rey2

BB.

With the amount of Russians kicking around I don't see why it's a problem to bubba them. Currently have a Tapco stock on this SKS and it looks fine. Took the bayo off... I'm thinking I might buy another just for s**ts and giggles. Hell anything to piss off them hippie liberals

I love mine, I'm going with the ATI Fiberforce stock i had an airrifle with this style stock and loved it! I have a tapco mag on the way and will top it off with a choate scope mount, sksman.com has them for $42

Die hard milsurp users find it sacreligious to modify historical firearms; hacking up (or modifying) a Garand, K98, Lee Enfield, etc. draws gasps of horror from the milsurp crowd. SKSs are cheap so people find it easier to justify doing so, I guess.

In the end it's your rifle, enjoy it however you want.
