Hello,
I am getting set up for 3 Gun competition and I have a question regarding my shotgun setup. I have a 870 tac express, all stock with no mods whatsoever. I would like to increase the shell capacity. Can I add a longer tube with out changing the barrel length? Can the tube extend past the end of the muzzle?

Thanks

I have a plus 3 on my 590A1...it's extends a good 6 or 7 inches beyond th ebarrel

It's not a problem...go for it.

Lol...my buddy has a 14" 870 with a 4 or 5 shot extension on it (total 9 rounds) looks funny but works great!

That's nuttin'...

'Knew a guy in MI who rigged himself up a 17 round tube on an 1100 or similar shotgun..
Friggin' thing would have made an excellent barge-pole!

I should have a photo or even some video of it in action...

if your going to have the mag stick out that far why not have the barrel to match the legenth. IMO short is for easy manurving and long is for accuracy. that set up would be the worst of both worlds.

If the barrel took a choke, I'd recommend the Remington Breecher choke, or similar. It extends beyond the barrel crown, and protects for when you accidentally smash the barrel into the ground, wall, door, whatever.

I use the same barrel for Turkey Hunting - just change-out the choke. (Which is why I want to keep it serviceable, instead of turning the 870 into a beater)

The easy answer is if it was beneficial to have a barrel the same length as the mag tube you can be pretty sure Jerry M. would be doing it that way.

Its actually ideal.
Increased capacity = fewer reloads = faster stage time.

Shorter barrel = less weight further out from your axis = quicker transition between targets.

Also, you aren't losing anything in accuracy or muzzle velocity by having a 21" or 24" barrel.
Most of the targets you will engage are pretty close.
Shot pattern is adjusted by choke.

For the majority of the stages I've shot, Canada and US, overall length of the shotgun is irrelevant.
But then again I don't compete in room clearing CQB type stuff.
