what does the 597 like for ammo?

Since it is a new rifle, run a couple of boxes of CCI Stingers through it first, then try any of the above mentioned Brands. I use Federal Bulk packs.

Be aware that when you disassemble it, and then go to re-assemble the 597, there are two screws that hold the guide rods in. Just tighten them FINGER TIGHT, until you can feel them stop, then back off 1/4 turn. If you tighten them too much, it will bow the guide rods, causing them to rub on the breech block and this will cause failure to fire, failure to feed, short stroking and other undesirable things.

Also make sure the recoil springs do not bind after you have put them in. The newer models have an enlarged end but the older ones can cause binding if they are assembled without a bit of care.

Go to rimfirecentral.com and check out the 597 section of the Forum. Lots of good information there.

I suggest you pick up a few different brands and try them out.

The the ones I tried, at least a dozen, all functioned well,

I just don't remember the ones I got the best accuracy from.

Too many .22's to keep track of.:D

I had one for all of less than 24 hours. It definitely did not like the Remington HV ammo too much. Tended to take off part of the bullet with the bolt sometimes. It got traded for a 10/22 Stainless all weather since the Remington's action was physically broken. It was the 4th or 5th 597 that the shop had sold and had to come back for repairs/exchange. They have not had the same track record with the Ruger's.

I've heard good and bad about both. I may have gotten a bad one but, that many returns on one model in a shop was not a good sign for me. I found the one I had seemed to have FTF and FTE issues right out of the box. I found the broken action piece when I went to check the rails. That was not very impressing, not what I would expect to find in a Remington.

Well I must have a good one. Put 100 rounds of yellow jackets down initially, then switched to bulk Federal. Zero failures on the yellow jackets, factory assembled, I didn't do anything but check the bore. I've had exactly 4 FTF's in almost 1500 rounds of Federal - I'm almost done it's 3'rd brick.

A buddy has the same rifle and after backing off the guide rod screws it too performs on all types of HV ammo. He did have issues with anything but Yellow Jackets, but after servicing he's on to bulk packs too.

One type I can say to stay away from is Winchester Wildcat. I never had problems with this ammo in my Lakefield Mk.2 or my Browning BPR, but for some reason, my 597 hates it. Stick to federal bulk and Wnchester 555 for good quality, cheap ammo that will work all day long. There are more expensive kinds that will work too.

Great! Thanks for all the reply's. I am trying the 30 rounder magazines and the feed spring seems to struggle to keep up with a fast trigger finger. Took the mag apart and sprayed the spring with a little gun oil. Has anyone else had trouble with the 30 round clip? And I ordered the Volquartsen exact edge extractor just because;)

No but I'm chatting on another thread about how you lose the last-round-hold-open with the 30rd mags. His specific issue is when loading the 30rd mag into the gun with the bolt already open, it will not properly chamber the first round and jams. Not sure if this is a common issue or perhaps there's a flaw with his specific mag. Perhaps you can shed some light on that?

Federal bulk packs, or cci stingers for mine. Each rifle may vary for ammo though, nothing in remington ammo seems to work for remi guns .lol

Mine is pretty strange about ammo. It shot almost everything like crap. But... One lot of Lapua Super club was shooting like a high end bolt gun.

Each rifle is different. You'll have to try a bunch of stuff to see what it likes.

Yeah for some reason the remington 30 rounders are notoriously ####ty. I dont think I've made it through an entire magazine without atleast 1 or 2 problems, even with the same ammo that works fine in the 10 rounders.

From the reviews I've seen and read the Remington 30 rounders are hit and miss, mostly miss.

I've heard that the black ones are better than the clear ones but I only have experience with my black one.

I bent out the plastic tab that activates the the bolt lock and it now locks the bolt back most of the time.

I tend to get failures to eject (stovepipes) once in a while with this mag. It's about 50/50 as to whether I'll get through the full mag without a malfunction.

Also, mine happens to hold 32 rounds.

I can't see this mag being overly durable as it has plastic feed lips. If somebody would bring out a quality 25 - 30 round mag with steel lips that was reliable it would sell well.

I have 5 of the factory 10 rounders and they all work very well. A malfunction is very rare with any of those. Apparantly the earlier versions of these were hit and miss as well. The newest ones have a number 10 in a circle at the lower forward right side of the casting. All five of mine have this.

Would you mind telling us where to order the Volquartson extractor from?

Thanks.
