Warning: Norinco .45 Auto brass

I bought 100 rounds of the Norinco .45 ACP ammo to try out. It's dirty and sticky but it seems to shoot fine though a couple of times the last round in the mag FTF due to stickiness. No big deal.

Advertised as non corrosive and re-loadable I collected my spent cases. I think I only recovered 90 of the 100 I shot but of those I found two cases like this after tumbling.

My Remington R1E 1911 is pretty new but it does like to dent the brass during ejection. However this should not happen. I wonder if these were the two that FTF? Regardless, I won't be reloading Norinco brass
 
I picked up some range brass and FL sized it an the bass was so inconsistent in thickness that it created a ring of brass at the base on the case head. I don't think I'll pick up any more norc brass. Was concerned that the brass could have damage my die.

If possible, measure some other cases fired from your chamber.

My guess is the brass might be a bit on the hard side, and your chamber might be a bit generous.

What, exactly, do you think a peice of brass could possibly do to a carbide/steel die?:confused:

I can try but it's a brand new Remington R1 enhanced. The hard brass might make sense, these Norc brass seems to be a few grains heavier than Federal and RP ones I picked up. What should my max chamber dia. be?
 
That black gunk inside your brass looks like lacquer. It might be the source of the stickiness. They must have mixed a cheap aggregate material other than copper to make the cost of goods cheaper, and thus the cracking from being brittle. Not supprising.

No, not surprising at all, if it can be done.

I do a lot of work in China. They truly are great people but in their rush toward the 21st century, suffer from an overabundance of pragmatism. "If it looks like a duck, its a duck" and if adding pewter, or whatever ??, to brass makes it cheaper to produce ,, "why not"? You could also have reworked X military brass. The Chinese are not a wasteful people.

Also, Norinco ammo is marketed as non-corrosive. IMHO,, maybe. You'd have to test every batch you bought to be sure.
 
FWIW I burned through 4 or 6 boxes of Noc .45 ammo about 6 years ago. I've since reloaded the brass 2-3 times. None of my Norc .45 brass has split as pictured.
 
I had 5 cases of a box of 50 that split like that a couple years back. Only it was factory 9mm American Eagle 124 gr. ammo. I e-mailed Federal with the lot # of the ammo along with pics of the cases. Never did get a response.
 
I wouldn't be too concerned about it. Any handgun case will eventually crack in the same way if reloaded enough times. The case is scrap, but it won't hurt anything. If you got a good price on it, so what if you have to toss a few cases a little earlier? Most of the time, you will end up losing brass before it fails, anyway.
 
The brass is 70/30 cartridge brass

Most is imported. When I was there South Africa (PMP) had supplied the brass for the current run. It is put out to tender.

Cracks happen. It can be a missed anneal, age hardening, the gun, many factors. As indicated above it happens with all the brands.

2 cases out of the hundreds of thousands sold in the last few months does not concern me in the slightest.

If it says non-corrosive it is. I have yet to see any evidence that norinco has ever sold corrosive ammo as NC.

The black gunk is tar-based sealant. It is used to keep water out and common on military ammo around the world.
