Thanks for the tip on posting in Milsurps, I should have known better.
In my haste to post the question, I didn't look all the way down the list of sections.
I gather that the laminated stocked ones, would be less desireable and sell for less.
Would I be right in assuming that the closer to the end of WWII, the poorer the QC.
What would be the going price of a laminated stocked K 98 in excellent condition?
They are not less desirable as almost any wartime German K98's are worth a premium. They are much easier to find as the older Hardwood stocks were damaged and replaced due to war attrition, etc..
The QC did get somewhat poorer in some of the factories, but the K98 action was still strong and useable right to the end. Concentration Camp made K98's may have a poorer fit and finish than others. The K98 went through many changes in steel finish, going from milled to stamped/welded parts, less inspection on the smaller parts, differences in the stocks, etc...
A Laminated Stock K98 in Excellent condition can be anywhere from $350 to $2000.... You REALLY need to narrow your search conditions...
You can get Russian, Norwegian, Czech, Yugoslavian, Israeli, etc refurbished captured K98s for less than a German one. Also you will pay MUCH more for a matching numbers K98 compared to a mismatch... also overall condition plays a huge part. Not to mention the plethora of different K98 manufacturers which will play into desirability.
Best bet is to perhaps do some more online research, or if you have the cash. Purchase: "Backbone of the Wehrmacht", and "Kriegsmodell" published by Collectors Grade Publications.
Google is your friend.
Cheers!
