how do you guys clean your brakes? i dont have an ultra sonic cleaner to drop it in to, so far ive just tried some spray cleaner and q tips but there has to be a better way to get it clean without hurting the finish on it. any tips would be great

im just anal about cleaning my barrel after each time i shoot it. ive copper fouled it a few times now and i dont want it happening again so i make sure its spotless after each outing. but each outing for me is also no less than 60 shots through that gun.

ill just stick to that method then, thanks for the reply

If it isn't an indexed brake it is easy to remove it for cleaning and screw it back on...

Hoppes #9 solvent and bronze cleaning brushes in a drill chuck work well. I don't know what kind of finish you have to worry about... normally it's stainless...

G96.....let it soak...then blow out with compressed air.
But do it before cleaning bore.

I Agree

If you don't have an air compressor and you are that passionate about cleaning the muzzlebrake the following suggestion would depend on the style of brake. I have only handled a couple brakes but I don't use them, so my suggestion may be complete rubbish, but they look like a determined man could use dental floss, and for threading it through a hole, there are devices for people with braces to feed the floss between the brace and gums.
Toothpicks also work for the small gap between your teeth.
If you can find a pipe cleaner that isn't cored with a steel wire, those cleaners that a kid might make into a drawing as they come in different colours.

A guitar string off a classical guitar: The core is nylon, the winding is brass. Cut a short piece(low E to D are wound, the others are smooth nylon) and it should be stiff enough to poke through the holes.

my finish is black but it was baked on by jeff from grizzly gun works. i love the brake so its staying with the gun makes the gun so much nicer to shoot.
ill try the hoppes just clean it by hand to see how the finish on the inside reacts to the brush. thanks fellas

How about something truly novel? Something that is DESIGNED for this purpose.
Wipe Out foaming bore cleaner will remove copper and carbon deposits perfectly without hurting the finish, removing anything and it does it chemically with no scrubbing of dickin about.

I only had to remove mine once as it doesn't get cleaned very often, but I just unscrew it and toss it into the ultrasonic cleaner along with the bolt. I use that cleaner for just about every rifle part that it will fit. Makes life especially easy when shooting an SKS. If you don't own one, its really worth the investment.

I dont clean my guns unless it shoots bad or goes under water or mud:D

lol i clean mine and darren with the 50bmg said hes never seen a barrel fouled worse than mine, so now im extra careful to keep the copper out :D

wheres the cheapest place to get wipeout? ive got some stuff in a blue and white can, im too lazy to get up and look but i wanna say its gunslick. that stuff works great. i blast the barrel with it, let it sit, put a patch through several hours later, hit it again, patch, then brush and liquid cleaner and by then its spotless without using 40 patches. i think wipeout is the stuff darren used on my gun to get the copper out and it did a fantastic job

Then it goes in the EE as barely used, only cleaned once and babied more then my forst born..........

haha i get a kick out of those ads, guys saying theyre selling their 9mm with only 400 rounds down the tube, really? because i put 200-400 each time i take mine shooting and i go a couple times a month, i mean, barely used...

I'm with Jamie on this one. Only clean when the groups open up. Other that that it is just a wipe down and bolt grease. I have gone over 800 rounds before cleaning and still won matches.

That's called having a factory barrel :p they will tend to do that. My tikka has a factory barrel and it's been copper fouled perminantly since the first box of ammo I ran threw it over 2 years ago, still shoots sub MOA (it's a lite barrel hunting rifle) They way I look at it, the faster I wreck it the sooner it gets a quality barrel

im gonna get a heavy barrel for this thing eventually, im just waiting to finish this one off, its gotta be nearing or at 1000 rounds already and it still shoots great.
