I've been shooting milsurp my whole shooting life thus far (and a Norc M14).
I've decided I want to build a budget tack driver.
Ive tracked down a stock, almost mint Stevens 200 in .223 Rem.
I've always been an irons guy so I know nothing about scopes (except how to use them/zero them from my military experience, which like all other training we receive, is probably just enough to be dangerous to ourselves and others )
I'm looking for the best scope at the cheapest price (kind of like the Stevens 200 rifle itself) to reach out from about 100-200 meters.
Any input on models to look into and ones to absolutely avoid will be appreciated.
Educate me gentlemen :D

very easy to mount them. a set of weaver bases, or a egw rail and a decent set of rings (I assume 1 inch) and everything will be good to go.

The .223 recoil isn't going to be hard on your set-up so you don't have to worry about that.

I think your Stevens 200 will have been drilled and tapped by the factory for bases. Weaver makes bases for it and they aren't expensive. All you have to do is screw them in with the included screws and a bit of Loc-tite or similar thread glue. The only problem you'll have is if they didn't drill and tap those holes straight, and if that's the case, take it to a gunsmith.

Next, rings. I generally just use Weaver top detach rings which are pretty reasonably priced and pretty solid but a bit fussy to get them screwed down right because they tend to rotate the scope at the last few turns. That's why lots of people like other types of rings, and I hope you'll hear from them because their experience will be useful on this.

I think a used or VXII or a 3200 in 3-9 would be the best for your dollar and use. I like fixed scopes for target shooting so I'd be looking for a used higher magnifacation fixed.... like a 24x but they are hard to find for $200.

Burris Z rings are the answer all scope allignment problems and they're cheap. 200's are drilled and tapped.

Stevens 200

I have one in .243 Win. I put a Bushnell Trophy 4-12x40mm AO on it that I scored off the EE here.

Bases are Weaver, rings are standard Burris Z rings.

I'd be just as happy with a 3-9 somthing like a Redfield Revolution, Bushnell 3200 or Leupold VX-1 or VX-2 for it as well, though.

NAA.

use weaver bases and burris z-rings, making sure to clean everything (including the holes tapped into the receiver and blue lock-tite) and Bob's your uncle!

This is great info guys!
Much appreciated!
The Redfield Rev looks pretty solid.
I like the cleaner look of the weaver rail, plus I can adjust the scope forward and back with the rail to adjust for my size and preferance, so I think I will go with that.
Now I just need to track down a used scope for relatively cheap :D
I'm going to end up selling one of my milsurps I never shoot to fund this baby.
Papa needs a precision shooter!

Redfield Revolution & Nikon Prostaffs come to mind!;)

I have a 4-12x40 Redfield on my 17hmr and a 3-9x40 Prostaff on my 45/70 SBL.
The Nikon is holding up to the recoil no problem what so ever, and I'm very please with it for the price tag...But in saying that I would spend the lil bit extra and get the Redfield...Its definitely a little better optics.
I agree w/ the others...Weaver bases and "Medium" Burris Zee rings!

Dont get me wrong if a Prostaff is what you want then go for it, theres not a thing wrong with them for the $.

I'm currently negotiating for a used Bushnell 3200 and a used Redfield Rev, I guess it will come down to which guy wants to meet my offer lol.
Another question regarding the Harris Bi-Pod. Do they mount easily to the Stevens stock? Or are cut's/modifications required to be made to the polymer?
Again, thanks a lot for all this info guys! :D

I like Bushnell. I'd go for the 3200 in a heartbeat. I'm surprised there's not more support for them here on this thread.

You should be able to attach your bipod to the front sling swivel stud without any modification. However, many have noted that the Stevens stock is pretty flexy at the forend, and this may mess with bipod technique. You can stiffen the forend on a budget with some time and a DIY attitude. Check the Precision forum for details.

My eyes see no difference between my 3200s and my revolutions...
If you go with a bipod definitely buy a Harris(they are the best)
You wont have any problems, they snap right on!
Keep in mind they make a non-pivot and pivoting model, whichever you think suits your needs more.;)

I'd like to get the same setup...Stevens 200 in a 223 with a Nikon or Redfield Scope with a custom stock. Didn't Savage bring out the Axis/Edge to replace the Stevens 200? Does anyone know if the Stevens 200 will become obsolete in the near future?

I'm not sure the intent of the Axis was to replace the Stevens, but it is definitely cheaper construction. Regardless, I'd be willing to bet the Stevens 200 still sells really well. I don't think there is any danger of the Stevens 200 becoming obsolete: If I recall correctly, in current production models the 200 is the same receiver as the entire 10/110 line (10/11/12/14/16 plus long action types), which is Savage's bread and butter for centerfire rifle. It is a slightly less-refined version of the cheapest 11/111 rifle. Even if the 200 were to be discontinued, I wouldn't be worried since parts will always be available as long as the 10/110 line lives.

My 200 is a 30-06 and I went a little higher end with bases (Talley Lightweights) and scope (Burris Signature 3-9x which I already had on hand). Nothing wrong with Weaver rings and bases or a lower priced scope. Like TheTooner said, a 223 isn't going to beat your scope up even in a light rifle.

Hope this thread isn't too dead to get attention, alright so I have the Stevens 200 in
.223, ended up with a second hand Bushnell Trophy 3x-9x 40mm for cheap.
Called in a favour to a friend for the Harris Bi-Pod $0 :D
So, now the scope base and the rings.
.223 isn't exactly a high recoil caliber even in a bolt gun, so someone steer me into options for a mount and rings that isn't a "tacticaly" priced piece of kit.
Like I said I'm new to commercial optic sights and shooting in general, this will be my learning/familiarization/utility rifle. I'm trying to keep the cost to a minimal while not sacrificing performance completely.
Any recomendations for a Stevens 200 scope mount and rings?

Here is my setup. Stevens 200 .223 cal , bushnell 6 x 18 , Basix customTrigger , Generic Bipod.
Sub MOA with reloads.I have the leupold standard bases and rings. I like being able to adjust the bases for windage keeping my reticle as opticaly centerd as possible, i may upgrade to a tactical turret style scope in the future but for now this rifle is a pure joy to shoot.

Nice set-up man!
I can't wait to get mine together!
So what are some recomendations for bases and rings, low cost/good performance?
I was looking at Weavers but like I said, I don't even know how to tell if it will work/line up with my tap holes on the 200.
Is there a set-up that comes with the base and rings that you would recommend?
