Quality of Smith and Wesson nowadays?

It was my understanding that they started making 629's in 1978 and it was simply a nomenclature issue. I thought all -2's were -2's. But hey, you're Harry Callahan, you'd know. And it was listed on the EE as 7&1/2", I was just making a point.

They did start the production of the 629 in 1978, the no dash 629 was first made with the P&R features. In 1982, the 629-1 joined the 29-3 in dropping the pinned barrel and counter bored cylinder features.

No worries mate!

Chill out, just wanted to make sure you knew what you had. It appears you didnt quite know, but still a nice piece just the same. I was looking at the add too, why i knew what it was listed as. Im looking for an old 29-2 myself.

It's a nice piece indeed and priced right if in the condition described by the seller.

So where is the 6.5 measured from? My 29-2/3 (hard to tell) is 6.5 measured from the front of the cylinder.

didn't the -3 model get beefed up a bit for digesting full house loads on a more regular basis? Im sure i read that in a G&A back in the day....
I looked at the 29-3 in milarms a few times in the last few months, other than some bluing wear it seems like a pretty solid revolver still even thoe it is well broke in.

Yup, from the front of cyl. to the muzzle end

6.5 - So, do I qualify as a DH gun owner? That's what I have been calling it, it's my DH gun, Shoots 44spl like the are guided by a laser beam, love it.

44Mag, well to each their own, I bring it out on occasion to give newbs a thrill.

In 1990 the 629-3 was introduced along with the 29-5 with the "strengthening" package.

Looks like you do qualify M! It's a lot of fun to shoot some mild specials out of it.

I got a chance to buy this gun, what do you guys think? Its a model 27-2. It was orginally 8 and 3/8s barrel but the owner had it cut down to 5 inchs by a profession gunsmith. It comes with orginal box and papers. It has a match trigger and its has been worked on so its quite fine. Has only ever has a small about of .38 special shot through it.

S'all good. My apologies. Bad day that day. I originally had a deal going for a 29-2 that looked exactly like the one I bought except in nickel. Pinned barrel and recessed chambers and all. The dude contacted me and then decided not to sell it, bummer. I snapped at the 629-2 in the ad assuming it was the same as the 29-2 but stainless. The truth hurts sometimes. Now, the original chap with the 29-2 has contacted me again saying he may in fact want to sell. So I could end up with both. If that happens I'll keep the 29-2 as is and either sell the 629-2 or send it to get the barrel cut down to 4.2". Btw, that model 27 looks sweet.

A guy I met at the pistol bays on Saturday is selling it. He is asking 850, if i had the money id probably would have bought it already. If your interested i can pass the info along to him.

Finally

After a lot of searching my quest has come to an end.
The results:
This is the 629-2 I bought first, mint, very low round count.

And after the original deal not going through because the owner having a sentimental attachment (rightfully so) to it, the Model 29-2 circa 1972-1974, in nickel, less than a box of ammo thru it, complete with walnut box, that I recently got my dirty mitts on.

I was originally planning to have the 629 cut to 4.2" but now I don't know. My wife sees them as his/hers revolvers. (hers is the 629)
Or I might just sell the 629.

Very nice!!! Nice Score!

The Freedom Arms revolver is probably the best firearm made in the world today.

And today's S&W guns are poor imitations of what they used to be.

I shoot at the McMurray club and if we meet you might want to try out my 1978 vintage S&W Model 27-2

thats what I was thinking unfortunately .
