While I agree with your opinion that a shortened position on the handguard reduces the level of control, it far from indicates lack of skill with any given platform.

It's like saying a pitcher who throws side-arm or any other unorthodox style "doesn't know how to pitch"...

Yes they are Butler Creek - I believe it's #4 front and back.

The only point is you can't fit the 2x magnifier with them on, don't know if that matters to you.

Thanks Claven2 - they're not Magpul/Troy but I do like them, work well and lightweight.

And noooo, no shilling here. Just positive posts about my experiences. However, I'd happily consider some extra positive posts if Magpul/NEA/Surefire/any ammo company would like to send me loads of free samples to test :D lol

I specifically said magwell hold, not shortened position.

And yes, there is always an exception to the rule but in general my statement is valid.
 
Since we are discussing the AFG here is how I have it installed on my carbine

Note that it is bolted to the last notch in the forend rail and hangs out in space a bit. I found the more length the better. If I had a 12 inch rail it would move it further from the receiver

As far as using a magwell hold, I still find I do when I am trying to do a rapid mag change. My support hand naturally goes there when I hit the bolt release. Also not the grip tape on the front and strong side of the magwell where my fingers go.

I don't tend to use the charging handle on a mag change cause I only have 5 rounds in the mag. If I am doing a "tactical" reload with one in the chamber and I rack the charging handle I just tossed 16.67% of my ammo on the ground. That is damn near HST here in ON :) Percentage wise that is the same as 5 rounds from a proper 30 round capacity mag. If I always use the bolt release I don't dump rounds by mistake.

Does this all mean I don't know how to fight with my rifle.....probably. I'm just a shooter baby, not a fighter. :D
 
Nice. How's the SPARC working for you OP?
I'm looking around for optics for mt 10.5 NEA, and I'm undecided between the Lucid HD7 and the Vortex SPARC- although I'm leaning towards the HD7

My hand naturally goes just in front of the magwell every time. Since it wants to go there I'll accept it as me and my physical form. Everyone is built different. I cannot shoot a rifle with my hand 12" out like the OP, but hey it works for him.
Besides, I will just be playing CQB at a range where safety is first, your safety buddy checks to see if your rifle/handgun is clear before any further transition and 5 rd mags will get dumped in out more than the gun will get fired. :)
It's just for fun, not real world scenarios or zombie apocalypse.

BTW, Bolivar can you still attach the bayonet with that setup?

Not too sure if I'm just misinterpreting what you've said here (if so apologies), but speaking from my experiences once you shoot it enough you'll get that feeling of when the bolt locks to the rear. Therefore you shouldn't even have to worry about the charging handle or the bolt release on a tactical reload (1 still in the chamber) because you will know by feel that the bolt is still forward. Only have to grab the mag out, replace with a fresh one. But then again I am speaking from the perspective of someone who has only shot with 30 round mags (military). All comes from experience and loads and loads of rounds, therefore many many more range trips are required ;), oh darn what a shame lol.
