Hi fellow clay busters,

I have been offered a couple of Perazzi shotguns and would like to know the difference between them. On is a MX-8 and the other is a DB81. I know that the DB81 was designed for Dan Bonillas in 1981 and has a higher rib; aside from this I do not have much information.

I would like to know how compatible these guns are just in case some day I would like to change the barrel, upgrade the wood or if something breaks will I be able to use MX-8 parts.

Both guns are in excellent shape, the MX-8 is $ 5300 and the DB81, which by the way, is a combo, is $ 6500.

As usual, any advice will be greatly appreciated

Cheers

MX-8 is the Sporting version with low vent ribs, Pistol Grip and Beaver Taile forend.
its good to shoot sporting clays and skeet with it.

DB81 is the Trap gun. 16 yard, HCP, Contenantial, Double.. or anything to do with 5 stang game. It tends to have heavier and longer barrel then sporting version and i have shot DB81. The super-high vent does allow me to see the clays faster, that means i can hit the bird faster.

They both are great shotguns and the price tells you exactly. Since you are looking for high-end shotguns, Try'em out and see what you like the most..
the High vent and Monte-carlo stock for DB81 needs to get used to. I like it but many people do not.

You will never have to change barrel or upgrade stocks on it since the wood stock on it will be the best quility. I did change stock on mine to fit my body form and stock alone did cost $2000 with custom bending and so on.. if you dont mind spending few extra dollars then go ahead but wont need to change barrel at all.

Considering both of the guns are "clays" gun and being Pereazzi, you will prob fire hundred thousands and more without any truble. But being said, $500 gun that fits you better then perazzi will make you shoot better..

I actually ordered it from Beretta Gunsmith from america.
Know what angle and length i wanted so built from that. the wood was tiger print with just an oil finish. no gloss. it does wear out fast without any coating but i think it does look better when stocks are little wore out. lol
I think there are few guys in canada that does it but donno who is "known"

This is often correct but not always. The MX8 was Perazzi's base gun for many years and it was made in various configurations. I've seen trap, skeet, sporting and even field versions of the MX8.

Through its life the MX8 underwent some changes. Older models have a different forend iron, top lever spring and receiver configuration. What matters is when the gun was made. What is important is the serial number range in which the gun falls. The current version is the Series IV. The Series IV starts around 80,000 and is post 1992 manufacture according to Karl Lippard's book Perazzi Shotguns.

Thanks for the information, but I also need to know if the DB81 is one of these variations of the mx-8 and if parts are interchangeable between both.

I personally like the DB81 but if it is a very uncommon variation I might stick to the MX-8 with a greater availability if parts.

From what I've seen of the DB81 it is a modified version of the MX8 and the parts should interchange in every respect.

I own a DB 81 Combo, and know that all parts are interchangable, type 4 forend etc. Trigger groups are also interchangable as well.
If you live near Owen Sound, you are more than welcome to come and have a look, and I can show all the workings etc of the combo....

Thanks, this is exactly what I needed to know. Now I can buy the DB-81 with peace of mind.

Thanks for the offer. Would take it if I weren't living in Southern Ontario, but I will ask for your knowledge of the DB-81 once I have it in my hands

Than you all gentlemen for your prompt and knowledgeable advice.

Just to let everyone know, thanks to your advice I finally bought the DB-81. I already shot it and what a great gun it is. This is my first Perazzi and have to agree that it is possibly the best gun out there. Once I found the point of impact, clays started to drop like if I had been shooting this gun for years. The balance is outstanding, the recoil is straight back and both barrels have the exact same point of impact, impressive.

I you are ever in the South Western Ontario area and want to give it a try I will be more than glad to take you to my club.

Congrats on the new gun. As for letting someone shoot your gun just be aware that it tends to ruin them for anything else and they go through life lusting after a P-gun. It's why I'll let just about anyone try mine. ;)

Oh, that's just mean :D

A club member at my club let me try his very high grade K-80 with an unsingle barrel and soft touch recoil reducer, shooting one ounce loads.

You have to check the hull to see if it went off, so little recoil and oddly quiet.

Also nothing but ink balls, it has completely ruined me, I think about that gun all the time, knowing it's not for sale and there won't be another one like coming down the road anytime soon.

Congrats on the perazzi btw, I like perazzi's but would only buy new and have it fitted to me. I would be buying for skeet and the barrels would HAVE to be 50/50 POI I can't stand it when they any different. But for trap I like 70/30.
