Dear all,

I am a somewhat new hunter. I have a rifle and x-bow and now am looking into a shotgun.

I will only use it for two things:
- Turkey
- Geese

Previous years i have borrowed from a buddy of mine, but would now like to get my own. I would like to spend +-600$ or less taxes included and get one with camo!

The models I have spotted are:

Remington 887 camo (490$)
Mossberg 835 camo (470$)

Any opinions on these guns? Also, for the hunting I want to do, do I need additionnal chokes? This is not clear to me. Also open to other makes/models.

Thanks for any input. I appreciate it.

887 is garbage. Get an 870 if you want a Remington. Any modern shotgun will have screw chokes and a new one will likely come with several. Modified or Improved is good for geese, you'll want a full or extra full for turkey.

I'd check out the Winchester SXP or Browning BPS in that price range too. Camo is not a necessity, and in your price range will likely start to flake off in the first year of use.

get the 835 greatest gun ever. i have one shots anything you feed it. the modified choke it comes with works well for everything

My advice is go to the store and look at a few and see how they fit. If the gun doesn't fit it won't be much good to you. By the time everyone is done telling you what gun to get, probably every make will be covered and you will be just as confused as before you asked. One thing I agree on, you don't need cammo.

I can't really comment I bought a 12 Ga Stoeger P-350 2 yrs ago and haven't fired it . It comes with 4 or 5 chokes and is Camo . Paid under 500

This is probably the best advice in the thread.
I'm new too, looking into my first shotgun...my head is spinning from all the questions I've been asking people and all of the different advice I've gotten.

I'm looking for a reasonably priced SxS that isn't a piece of junk, and it is proving to be a real challenge. Ellwood Epps has a ton of them listed on their site, so hopefully I can find something used that suits me there.

Good luck in your search. The only real world experience I've got is with a Rem 870 and an 1100. If I weren't looking for a break-action, I'd be deciding between pump or semi, and grabbing one of those.

Waterfowl and the occational grouse hunt down trails that are a little more grown in is what I purchased my M887 Nitro Mag for and it does its job well. It looks like a 10ga shotgun because of its polymer coating makes it look a lot bigger. It is kind of bulky but that doesn't bother you when all you're doing is sitting and waiting for a flock of geese to come in for a landing. I'm very happy with mine and would recommend it. I have no experiance with the Mossberg you speak of so I can't comment on that.

You see the Gunnutz Beaver mascot up above?
His barrel is pointing at T.E.C aka Trade Ex Canada.
Give Tony a call and tell him what you want.
I am sure out of all their stock there will be something for you there.
Meander on over and have a lookyloo.
Have a pen and paper to write down the inventory that tickles
your fancy and then get on the phone.
That chap won't steer you any way but the write way.
Cheers.

if you live in ontario shoulder a benelli nova. Basspro has them for sale for $520 plus tax.

Drive up to ellwood and buy a mossberg 930 combo. Better gun and the same price as those two you listed. $540 plus tax at Ellwood.

you do not need camo.

I only know 2 guys with Stoeger pumps and they hate them! Lots of problems.

Try to handle some different models. Mossberg 835, 535 or 500 are good deals. Brownings are nice. Depends on what you like.

Buy a turkey choke and you should be good to go.

If you want camo get camo. You may not need it but who cares, if you like it. I currently don't have any camo S/G's and I to want one, just cause.

A lot of bad press on the 887's to.

I'm gonna put in a good word for my Weatherby PA-08. Beautiful wood, beautiful finish. Ridiculously easy to clean and maintain. It functions flawlessly with everything I've fed it from very light target loads to magnum slugs. It was a whopping $20 more than the Rem 870 Express which has very plain wood, and some kind of matte finish which is neither blued nor parkerized.

If you're looking to tacticool it up or get lots of aftermarket accessories, look elsewhere.

In keeping with this advice, get a Purdey sidelock SxS with 32" barrels, choked full and full. Good for geese and turkey. It's a great starter gun, provided you are a Russian billionaire. LOL
