ordering a press from the US

I didn't want to hijack buttman's thread so I figured I'd start a new one.

With the very (overly) strict US regulations around anything 'gun', I just wanted to check that buying a press (and dies and scale etc) is ok, if I make a trip across the line.

Responders to buttmans thread seemed certain that it would be ok. I just wanted to ensure that 'it's already been done'. I wouldn't want a huge hassle at the border.

BTW, this comes about because I can't seem to find anyone with a Lee turret loader in stock! I'd love to shop in Canada but I can't find a turret kit anywhere!

If forum rules permit, I would certain appreciate pointers to any canadian dealers who have them in stock.....with online ordering of course.

Otherwise, I would appreciate the reassurance about buying in the US.

Press, dies, scales are classified as tools; you are only subject to the regulations regarding how long you are out of the country and how much you can bring back.
Reloading components (e.g. cases, bullets, primer, powders) and loaded ammunition are subject to US export rules (probably not worth your time and effort LEGITIMATELY bring these back with you).

Keep your receipt as proof of cost.

You can order normal hobby presses from the US without a problem. I think there is a restriction on commercial, powered presses but I don't think that's the scale you're looking for. Tools, dies, scales, funnels, pins, etc. are all good to go.

As noted above, components (powder, brass, projectiles, primers) are all restricted from export without paperwork. Just buy them on this side of the border.
 
Interesting.....just got an email from a Cabelas Canada customer service rep.
I asked if they could 'bring in' the Lee Turret Press Kit and he said no.

When I suggested that it was no big deal....that I could order in from the US....he was under the impression that I wasn't allowed....that it was restricted.

Goes to show, talk to those that have the experience...CGN members

There are two (possibly more) issues here at stake. Reloading tools are OK as far as ITAR goes. However, manufacturers can legally restrict the export of their products based on their distribution channels. Brownells, for example will not ship Butler Creek scope caps into Canada because of their retail agreement with Butler Creek.

It is possible (I don't know actually) that either:

a. the Cabelas rep just didn't want to do the paperwork or was unfamiliar with the process, or
b. Cabela's Canada cannot order the presses in from the US due to their distribution channels.

Try Higginson Powders or any of the other Canadian Lee retailers.

Just my take on it.

Titan Reloading in Wisconsin will ship lee presses and all the little extra peices that you need with the lee turret press, - extra die plates, safety primer feeder, and don't forget a powder riser. Also, a good item for this set-up is the swivel adaptor and the micrometer powder feeder measure. Most of these items are very hard to find in Canada(my experiance anyway). Your order is tracked through UPS. You will pay HST (UPS will act as customs broker and collect this fee upon delivery). Read the international shipping restrictions that are on the titan reloading web site, orders under $20.00 are exempt from fees just sent by regular mail.

Avoid shipping via UPS. In my experience, they will charge you an arm and a leg for their "brokerage fee".

Use the U.S. Postal Service. USPS charges are reasonable, soon as the package crosses into Canada, Canada Post takes over. Canada Post charges a flat fee of $5.00 for their trouble. Revenue Canada still gets their HST or whatever tax applies to your province.
 
Henry from Budget Shooter Supply is most likely the best place to get Hornady press from, unless you bring one from USA yourself on condition you don't have to pay duties.
John from Custom Reloading is the one with Dillons.

I'd vouch for either one of them any time.
