I hope it it fine to post this question in this forum. What exactly makes a group a "screamer"? It has been a while since I have heard it, so maybe no one even says it anymore.

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTTT ??????????????

Yeah that would be a screamer at >200 yds, I would say. If you're holding your target just past muzzle blast then no..............

. That is why I am asking. What qualifies as a screamer. Surely there must be some sort of definition other than a "one hole group"

Here is a very good and a soso example of a couple screemer groups

IBS screamer

The IBS Bench Rest organization with Precision shooting magazine gives out " Official Screamer Patches" for screamer sized groups, shot in IBS sanctioned matches. For 100 yards a 5 shot group must be less than .100 inches to receive a patch. And it used to be less than .200 for 200yd groups. I'm not sure what sizes qualify for greater yardages, but checking the IBS rule book, or Precision Shooting Magazine should give the sizes.

The term "Screamer" as I know it comes from shooting a 5 shot group at 100 yds that is measured outside to outside for the total group size minus the caliber diameter, which then totals less than .100". For a 200 yds group it would be less than .250".
These are the methods used in the International Benchrest Shooter (IBS) and the National Bench Rest Shooter Association (NBRSA) for short range group shooting.
They are also used by Benchrest Shooter Canada (BRSC).

Serious response to the original question: I always understood that "screamer" was a term from benchrest, meaning a group "in the zeros" at 100 yards, i.e. a five-shot group smaller than .100"

Now for the rest of ya.....

A very good shooter once told me, "nobody ever made a group smaller by firing another shot at it". It's a remark that was mostly meant in fun but it sure can trigger an awful lot of thought if you start thinking it through.

@Republic of Alberta, I have to say I like your definition of a screamer.

I understood ,but what your question lacked a parameter, namely distance. Asking if a 5 shot group with a .308 Win in the .4 of an inch is a screamer is like asking how long is it going to take to get "there" driving 50Km/h without a distance to "there"........compriende amigo ?:)
