ideal trigger weight/Varmint gun

I have a model 7 in .204 I just picked up and the trigger weight is horrible. Im thinking of sending it in to get worked on or getting a Timney trigger. The gunsmith I talked with said he could get it to the 3-3.5 lb mark and I see Timney offers pulls as low as 1 pound set at factory.
What is the ideal weight to get for a varmint/coyote gun? Most of my guns have been Tikkas and Savages and can easily adjust myself and just go by feel, never measured the weight of pull.

Get or borrow a scale to measure the pull on your Tikka/Savage guns. Get a trigger for your model 7 in the same weight as what you are used too. I like a nice light 1lb~ trigger for the range. I prefer 2.5-3lbs for any hunting rig.

I like to stay at or above 2 1/2 lbs on hunting triggers. Less if a dedicated target/range gun.
 
Avoiding accidental discharge is priority #1!

Tikka's have an almost perfect factory trigger which is adjustable from 2 to 4 pounds.
The minimum weight, 2 pounds is perfect for precision work where are shots are taken slowly and methodically.
The maximum weight, 4 pounds is perfect for less than perfect shot taken in less than ideal conditions (buck fever, cold temperature, wearing gloves).

When the weather is cold, I always keep my trigger at maximum trigger pull weight to avoid any accidental discharge.

As light as YOU can stand it.
I am a firm believer that if you're thinking what your trigger
finger is doing, your focus isn't completely on the target/fur and
this p.o.i. will suffer.
 
i have a rifle Basix on my stevens and even thought they claim it can adjust down to 1lb there is no way i can get it that low while maintaining a safe trigger.
its always a balancing act between seear engagement and trigger spring tension.
i now have it comfortably set at about 2.5 lbs crisp break no overtravel.
i dont think i would want it lower than that anyway.
my groups are good, i can hit what im aiming at and i consider it safe.
 
I haven`t been happy with going to 1lb. on a Timney trigger. 1.5 is about as low as i`ve been comfortable going and having them work proper. The last one i put on for a friend below 1.5 it was erratic, don`t get me wrong i like Timney triggers and have several but even on a varmint rig i don`t want to go to light espcially for winter coyotes. I find a good clean trigger with no creep is even nice at 2 lbs. if it is gritty or has a lot of creep and overtravel it will suck no matter what the weight of pull.
 
I like my varmint rifles at around 2lbs, and my big game rifles at around 2-3/4 lbs.I like the higher setting on my big game rifles because I don't like lighter triggers in very cold temperatures.
 
I won't set any of my rifles less than 3 lbs if they are used in cold weather. I just can't feel a 2 lb trigger with gloves on or numb, cold fingers. Target shooting is different than hunting. Target rifles can benefit from trigger pulls as light as 1-1.5 lbs as long as they are still safe. A summer varminting rifle used only in summer might have a 2-2.5 lb pull and remain safe.
 
Currently my Varmint rifle is sporting a 4-40oz. Rifle Basix trigger.
Range work see's it go to about 8-10oz. While actual hunting it sits about 1.25lbs.
 
I don't know if it is availible for a Rem but if I was changing triggers I would look for one with a set option. My new Sako 204 you push the trigger forward and it breaks at 7.5 ozs. When I'm hunting leave it alone and it breaks at 3 lbs.
 
Have my T3 HB varmit 22-250 set at 2.5-2.75lbs(great for target shooting...surprises me everytime)
Rest of hunting rifles are 3-4lbs(perfect for hunting Imo)

A friend had one of these on a CZ .223, I really liked it. Anybody know if they are available for Model Sevens?
