Look for a good camping shotgun

Stevens 350 security pump. It's an ithica 37 clone with an 18" barrel and ghost ring sights. Awesome reliable all steel setup. It's what i use for blacktail hunting on the island here, and it takes 3" magnum shells. I paid $239 plus tax for mine at wholesale. Very very reliable. Never failed to feed or eject anything ive fed it. Not to mention mine prints 2" groups with federal slugs at 50m! I'd bet my life on it in a heartbeat. The best part for me is the fact that it was so cheap and rugged it really gets thrown around without guilt. It is to me, the ideal camp shotgun.

Here is mine, it's the variant with regular iron sights on the barrel.

I've been using a stoeger coach gun for camping and such the last couple years.
No feeding issues yet :D
36.5" oal and 6.5 lbs.
$400-$500 new depending on model. Works for me.
 
Dominion arms grizzly tube fed would be my first choice. I bought mine when they first came out with ghost rings and i've run thousands of mixed rounds through mine without a hiccup. They seem a little heavier than the average 870 but they are compact and they run. Also they are cheap so when you roll your canoe you aren't gonna cry like you would if you lost your fabarm at the bottom of the lake.

Chances are in today's marketplace, you'll find there is very few bad choices IMO. I like Ithacas, my brother prefers 870s, and there are quite a few knowledgeable CGN fans of the Dominian Grizzly and the Stevens too. Mossbergs & Mavericks are rarely spoken poorly of btw.
Once upon a time I had a Maverick 88 too, and it never failed me in any way. Of course like any mechanical tool, this depends on the choice being in good working order and maintained somewhat.
I guess I should consider myself lucky, as I myself have never came into possession of a real lemon in any model of shotgun.

Just a quick question how are the ghost rings?
 
I have rolled this idea around over and over, taking a different firearm with me every year lol. Ive decided that one needs reliability and a system to cut down on operator error in times where stree is high. And it needs to work 100 percent, even when your not at your best (hurt, dissoriented, ect) I've missed shots while hunting because I got all excited and short stroked a pump. Now, lets say you got hurt during the day, broken limp, maybe even an arm in a sling, now its gonna be really hard to run a pump... over the years of hunting hiking and camping in remote hike/atv in area's Ive settled on a no B.S semi auto shotgun.

The M4. I used an 870 for YEARS and love it, still have it but when im at my worst, I need to know that my protection will work.
Its an investment, but how much is a life worth?

a 'camp shotgun' gets kicked around, exposed to dirt/debris/moisture, can potentially be dropped out of a canoe or off a cliff, rusts in your trunk, gets left behind (not in a million years by me, but several CGNers have found guns leaning against trees in the woods) etc.
not sure many people here can justify relegating a $2300 gun to a 'camp gun', especially not when a disposable $300 pump gun will do the same job and be at least as reliable.

Id also opt for a Dominion Arms Grizz (Non Mag-Fed) as a candidate, if your goin in the canoe, throw some water wings on er and shes good to go, however you may agitate some anti-gun lovin fishes or turtles though :D

But I do also have to agee that a "camp gun" will be exposed to anything and everything, and something reliable, inexpensive would be your best bet!
 
Yes agreed, I am presently not at a station in life where I can comfortably spend 2300 dollars on a single shotgun. But at 300 dollars for a reliable shotgun, the other 2000 could be spent on ammunition IMO. Or even a cloned spare gun. (or two) ;)

I am in your area and currently have for sale two Winchester Defender 12g shotguns (1200 and SXP.)
Either one would make a great camp gun.
They're both on the EE right now.
