I took my 180B to the range to sight in before going marmotte hunting. It was very windy and I only used the Versapod and held the Magpul mag. I flinched twice, age! Groups are good unoff at 100M for gophers with this PMC 55 Gr stuff. The trigger needs much improvement!!

BTW, it is a Leopold 8.5X20 Tactital with the MIL crosshairs.

It is still too wet and cold for the marmottes outside the city. But I did have a verynice big fox comeby and sat in the field some 25 yards out!

I wouldn't consider that good enough for gophers at 100 yards, nor would I shoot gophers with FMJ. Especially with the young gophers, they're often not more than 1-2" across. And with FMJ's, you won't get the splatterific results that make gopher shooting so fun.
 
Keep shooting it. The more I shot mine the smoother the action and trigger got. Around 500-700 rounds it was really nice and it's one of the ones I still regret selling.
 
You mention the trigger could stand a lot of improvement. Do you still have the stock trigger installed? The reason I say this is because the 180B can take an AR-15 2 stage trigger. The only stipulation is that you have to use the 180B's original trigger pins (which are longer), since the reciever is wider than an AR-15's. I installed an RRA 2 stage trigger in mine, and the difference is like night and day.

Thats not true I have shot plenty of gophers with FMJ 223 and they all splattered. Maybe not as well as a Nosler ballistic tip or other varmit rounds but they do alot more than 22lr does.
 
I forgot about the AR 2 stage! I will order one ASAP! Did I mention very windy?! I also did not use any rest except for the Versapod and Mag. If I would be shooting at a live marmotte under those conditions, I would rapidly shoot several rounds to compensate. At this shooting range, you are only allowed ONE shot in the mag at a time.

BTW, the FMJ when entering tumble and create a good wound channel. On marmottes or gophers, the energy at speed is distructive! I been shooting marmottes, gophers and even prairie dogs for 45 years with everything from
.22, various pistols including my trusty PPK/S in 380 to all sorts of rifles. My all time record for distance on a marmotte: 700 measured paces and shot with my 700 BDL sniper in 7-08 with a 100gr Hornady at a super hot 3240 FPS, witnessed!

What range is that? I would never go there because of that rule alone.

I agree, FMJ will splatter a gopher. Not as nice as a varmint bullet but the velocity will easilly pop those little guys.
I would say the only downside to FMJ on the field is the riccochet factor. A varmint bullet will blow apart on anything but the FMJ could skip and travel on. Depending on where your shooting this may or may not be a consideration.

If anyone wants help with gophers in the Edmonton area shoot me a PM. I just moved to an acreage west of town and will be visiting the local farmers to try to get permission but Parkland county is rimfire and shotgun only and I'd really like to take some of the fun stuff out once in a while as well.
