I'd like to here from those that have tried some of the 17 hmr offerings out there. There seems to be a good selection of rifles under $400 out there.

Which bolt actions have you found to be the most accurate. I'm looking for a solid no frills bolt gun to plink and hammer on the gophers.
 
I found that of the numerous Savages I have owned, the stainless tended to be more accurate than the blued ones, don't know why but they just were. I would recommend going Savage or CZ if you want to spend a little more, for the money both companies make incredible rifles.
 
x2 FOR THE SAVAGE 93. Mine shoots inside .5 " @ 100yds on a "very calm, windless day" with Winchester Supreme .
Its absolute murder on grouse heads too. Haven't shot any sod poodles with it yet.
Emphasis on the " very calm , windless day".
Get one. You will like it.
 
Got the savage 93 with the heavy barrel and wood stock and scope combo for around $300 new and got a 4 shot 3/8" group at 50 yrds with it last week. Can't beat it for the price.

I owned a Savage 93R17 BTVS (414$) which could shot 1 MOA at 100m all day long.
I sold this rifle and bought a Savage Mk II BTVS instead because of high ammo cost.

I have a Marlin 917VR that is scary accurate - but the trigger was garbage and the stock not much better. By the time I fixed those I had a $500 gun.

Great bones to build around, but I think the Savage might get the edge because it has a far better trigger.
 
I shoot a sako quad, and my friend shoots a savage. The target cannot distinguish between the two they are that close. Buy whatever you want, the 17's shoot well, almost all shoot well.

Heavy barrelled rifles tend to be much more rigid than tinner barrels and that means that they are far less sensitive to ammo variations:
  • groups tend to be tighter
  • different type of ammo shot at the same spot (POI)

A well designed standard profile barrel will deliver tack driving accuracy but a heavier barrel will do it more easily/consistently.

Well i may as well show what you can get for $399 plus tax... bipod and scope extra of course.
(well... i did anyways, my local gun guy is always willing to wheel and deal....)

Topped it with a Tasco 6-24x42mm and with a little more trigger time im POSITIVE i can keep them within an inch at 100, already got some 1.5" groups of 3 at 150 yards...

Another vote for stainless heavy barrel Savage. I've bought a few .17 HMR rifles over the years and got rid of them all except the very first one I bought which was almost 10 years ago. Of course, I did recently upgrade the furniture, just to change it up..

As for the price of the ammo, the accuracy of this little round is well worth the cost!
 
I picked up a savage 93r17 last weekend, and the thing is a laser. Off of a bipod today it was grouping around 1 MOA at 100. Tightest group measured up at 0.8" (4 touching, pulled one). Doesn't have the accutrigger either, which I would imagine would only make things better!

This is which a cheaper Bushnell banner 3.5-10x as well.
