Look for a good camping shotgun

i have a 870 tactical with a 18 inch barrel and a plus 2 ext... extremely reliable 400 bucks with tax...i added a pistol grip for 30 bucks and a shell holder for another 30... mild recoil due to its all steel structure, stock stock is very nice too.. fired 20 each of 000 3 inch buck and 00 2 3/4 buck, and my shoulder and cheek are very comfy

a Maverick 88 for about 200-250 is reliable, dependable, and timtested.

at 6 pounds it is also the lightest pump SG you can find. with an 18 inch barrell, 6 -shot capacity - the ideal camper/hiker SG, IMO.

DA Grizzly 8.5" or 14" for Ghost rings sights. I have the 8.5".

Small enough for camping, riding with me on the quad, keeping in my backpack while on my dirtbike or on the side by side.

Bears are capable of flying so you need something thats good at hitting something out of the sky. I guess a shotgun would work for hitting it but, will it take it down? Bears also have body armour and they even have a jet engine in their a$$ so they can really haul a$$ if they need to. The up side to that is bears let off a lot of heat because of that jet engine so what you need is a heat seaking missle launcher for a camping gun. But what if you run into a pack of wolves? You would be f#$%ed with just a missle launcher so what you need is a heat seaking missle launcher with a detachable magazine. These kind of missle launchers are only 50lbs, and each missle with the shell is only 2lbs. The missle launcher is also only 40inchs in length so it makes a perfect compact, easy to leave at camp all day, gun. Get this, its only $15,000! I bet you can find one on the EE for $10,000 more than that!

I'm amazed that this thread went on for 23 posts before someone finally decided to mock the bear defense subject.

Thanks NoBark, I was getting worried. ;)

If you buy the 8.5 you can't legally shoot any fool hens in BC or the boys in blue will take your guns! (read in the hunting regs) barell must be no shorter than 12" for hunting!

are you serious? it amazes me what stupid regulations we have in Canada.

in that case id definitely get a 12.5" Grizzly or ~18" 870/Mossy 500. no sense owning a gun you cant (potentially) hunt with.
not a big fan of the 590s for a carry-around gun as i think they are far too heavy/bulky, especially fully loaded.

Ya, the M4 ia expensive. But I double check camp so I don't forget things. I took care of my 870 when it was a beater. It never rusted. Just cuz something is used rough doesn't mean you don't take care of it. Also, its built tough. Its a LOT of money but I've saved for a while and traded in a fabarm.

Also, if your gonna spend that kinda money you better use it lol. No way is mine gonna be a safe\range queen

oh i totally agree with that.
best example is Busse knives. the guy makes the most reputable hard-use knives on the planet and 95% of them are being sold/traded in 'like new never used' condition by geeks that buy them just to collect them like pokemon, fondle them and pose in front of the mirror with them. its a #%@$ing tragedy.

if someone sent me a Busse i would use the everliving #%@$ out of it. until then, i'll make do with my Becker and Ratmandu. which, like the 870/Grizzly, perform the same job at a more accessible price range for us ordinary working schmucks.

An 870 or 1200/1300 would be a good choice. I've got an 88 too, but if you want to use your shotgun to pot grouse or other edibles I don't know if the 88 can be easily plugged. Just looking at mine I'm not sure how you would go about plugging the magazine. Where as the Remington or Winchester will accept one with no trouble. Keep in mind that a camp gun isn't just for defense.

if its the same as the Mossberg 500, you simply remove the barrel and unscrew the magazine tube (some are tighter than others, just grab the mag tube and unscrew), pull the spring/follower and put the plug in from there. i had the persuader variant, which required a custom plug - i made one out of a delrin rod.

id recommend upgrading the follower to a polymer hi-viz style while you are at it since the stamped metal Mossy 500 factory follower i had had a tendency to get its 'lip' (it had a tiny rolled lip at the edge of the follower) pinched in the little gap between the receiver/mag tube and block loading.

I'm very happy with the Ithaca M37.
Six and a bit in weight, steel parts, reliable as heck & cheap as a second hand purchase. Tough parkerized finish, hi-visibility shell follower. Spare parts are availeable if you know where to look. A lack of add on goodies keeps the mall ninjas in check IMO. About the only thing that could be useful would be some kind of flashlight mount for the dark hours and that's it.

Which ithaca do you have? I'd really love a short barreled version and have my fingers crossed that One Shot Tactical can bring them in.
