Request: lightweight 'survival rifle'.

Someone should make a high quality, light weight rifle, auto loading, 45 long colt that can shot .410 shot gun shells.

This rifle should fold in half or come part into 2 pieces.

I can not imagine a better solution for defense from wild animals/ slash hunting small game.

since we got the requirements figured out, lets get to work!

Actually on the other hand, the Taurus Judge sounds like a great option if it was not restricted!!!!!

But if your doing a dangerous job you can apply for a wilderness carry permit.

Now we can close this topic since it is fruit less and point less:

If they made this rifle in a folding option we would have a winner!

Taurus / Rossi Circuit Judge

The November issue of Shooting Illustrated published a letter from a reader who suggested Taurus make a carbine version of their Judge revolver and name it the "Supreme Court Judge". Gary from Oklahoma has had his wish come true. The new Taurus Circuit Judge is a revolver carbine that can chamber .410 shotshells (2.5" and 3") and .45 Long Colt.

The design is very similar to the Russian KBP MTs 225 revolver shotgun. The Circuit has a very attractive Monte Carlo stock (I guess a synthetic stock will be introduced at a later date). A cylinder guard on the left side of the gun prevents gas and flames from scorching your arm.

A light weight 30- 30 wouldn't be out of place either. Single shot or lever. Load regular ammo for big game and subsonic hard cast for small game. The subsonic bullets won't expand, just make a little 30 cal hole

See I don't have any of those issues because both cartridges are rimmed in my version. I may get the 30-30 over 12g model so that should be fine as well. I agree that the iron sights are lacking, in fact they pretty much suck. I think you'll see what I was talking about earlier when I mentioned the irons on the JW-15a are actually decent.

I have been trying my hand at a little gunsmithing lately, made an extractor for my .410 backpacker and that went well, now I am thinking it would be a fun project to chop an old 12g rossi barrel down to be about 6" long, and use it as a sleeve to hold a turned down .22 barrel (offset in a 4 jaw chuck slightly so the firing pin hits the .22 rim)
Then just a matter of getting some simple irons on it and seeing what it does. Oh, and a tiny ejector I guess too.

A .410 break barrel is pretty much right there, other than auto loading, which is not really my first choice for a rifle you will need to rely on. You will get a lot more velocity from .410 slugs too, if you can find any.

I was thinking of one of Canam's short 870 barrels adapted to a Cooey #84 or similar. Who is to say you could not get a 14" buntline barrel for some .45 Colt or .357 Magnum Colt SAA clone and make it fit into a single shot break action shotgun? It would be a fascinating project. There was a Cooey 84 in .25/20 for sale on the forums a while back.

You may wish to consider the Baikal IZH-94 Scout in .22 LR or WMR /.410 .... it is by far the best among current production firearm in its class.

The weight is around 7lbs though or a bit less depending on the wood. Offers takedown capability, hammerless and kinda double action...pressing the lever behind the trigger guard will open the breech and #### the action simultaneosly. The lever will need to be pressed again for the 2nd shot. Has a tang selector switch. Irons are fixed and accurate. Installation of optics may require finding the appropriate mounts. The .410 is equipped with screw-in chokes.

it looks like everybody has a different take on this? a gap in the market certianly exists, what do airforces around the world use for downed pilots now days, another area to look at is what bush pilots use?

^I think a .22 rimfire would be fine 99.9 percent of the time in our area of the world.

The main survival firearm the USAF and RCAF used to issue (a ways back mind you) was the M4 (Canadair Sabre) or M6 rifle (US service only?). The M4 was a .22 Hornet with a 14" barrel and wire folder stock.

its a Ar7.... ofcourse we heard of it. Who did not?
Henry makes it now. Reliability issues....

Downed pilots from fighter aircraft only have pistols...

If your on a bigger plane maybe you will get a ar15.

Good to know. I'm just start to look for one myself. Still a lot more research to do, a friend suggested the AR7.

My AR7 has thousands upon thousands of rounds down the barrel and has only ever had a few FTF's. I put them in the chamber they fired the 2nd time, it wasn't the gun.
